As a cinephile with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for tales of love and self-discovery, I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Queer.” Having followed Luca Guadagnino’s work since his critically acclaimed Call Me By Your Name, I eagerly anticipate his take on William S. Burroughs’ novel. The star-studded cast, including Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, promises a captivating story set against the vibrant backdrop of 1940s Mexico City.
The film studio A24 has unveiled the authentic poster for their upcoming romance drama titled “Queer,” which is helmed by Oscar-nominated director Luca Guadagnino, best known for his work on the Zendaya-led tennis movie “Challengers.” This announcement precedes the release of the film’s first trailer next week.
The movie will be screened in selected cinemas on November 27, 2024. Ever since its debut at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, it’s garnered a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes according to the Tomatometer.
Who is involved in the Queer movie?
The movie titled “Queer” is helmed by director Luca Guadagnino, who worked from a script penned by Justin Kuritzkes, the writer of Challengers. This screenplay was inspired by William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel with the same title. In this film, we see Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga, Drew Droege, Ariel Schulman, Colin Bates, Omar Apollo, Ronia Ava, and others taking on different roles.
1940s Mexico City serves as the backdrop for this tale, where we find William Lee, escaping the aftermath of a drug bust in New Orleans. In Mexico City, Lee immerses himself in the city’s nightlife and develops an affection for Eugene Allerton, a former United States Navy serviceman who struggles with drug use.
Following his work on “Queer,” Guadagnino is now engaged in a new high-profile production, titled “After the Hunt.” This upcoming thriller will feature an impressive ensemble cast that includes Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloe Sevigny. Simultaneously, Craig will make an appearance in “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” on Netflix, where he’ll resume his character, detective Benoit Blanc. Lastly, Starkey has recently resurfaced as Rafe Cameron in the most recent season of Netflix’s series “Outer Banks.
