7 shows to watch if you love The Crown

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story

We’ll dive into a restricted narrative centered around Queen Charlotte, who was King George III’s spouse. You might recognize her as the Queen Charlotte portrayed in ‘Bridgerton’, but remember that certain historical facts have been modified for dramatic purposes. Nevertheless, this doesn’t diminish its appeal as an engaging tale.

The narrative primarily explores Charlotte’s romantic journey with George, depicting her youthful infatuation and unwavering support during his bouts of madness. It’s important to remember that not all marriages from that era were driven by power dynamics. Many were arranged, yet lacked the notion of love at their inception. However, this particular union was an exception, as it evolved into a deep affection over time.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is available to stream on Netflix.

Young Royals

Fictional dramas don’t always have to be based on true events. Sometimes, like in the case of ‘Young Royals’, they are purely works of imagination designed for television enjoyment.

In this narrative, we delve into the storyline of a fictitious Swedish prince named Wilhelm, who embarks on his educational journey at a boarding school. Amidst the halls of learning, Prince Wilhelm finds himself developing feelings for a classmate by the name of Simon. Given that the Swedish Royal family values tradition and privacy, such a romantic entanglement with a male classmate is bound to stir up quite a scandal.

Watch all three seasons of Young Royals on Netflix.

The Last Czars

You may believe you’re well-versed in the Romanov family’s tale, but there’s more to uncover. The series, “The Last Czars,” offers a fresh perspective by focusing on Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna, Russia’s last empress, who was a relative of Queen Victoria through her grandmother. Interestingly, Czar Nicholas II had ties with King George V as well, and he sought his aid during their rule. However, at that moment, King George prioritized his own Royal family’s interests.

Initially, Czar Nicholas II takes the royal seat and concentrates on shaping the future for the Russian monarchy alongside his loved ones. Yet, as World War I draws towards its conclusion, a Russian uprising ensues, resulting in the incarceration and execution of the Czar and his family.

The Last Czars is a limited series and is available on Netflix.

Victoria

As we’ve brought up her name earlier, it’s only fitting that we include the series featuring her in our list. The drama Victoria on PBS sees Jenna Coleman portray Queen Victoria. The story begins with her ascension to the throne at 18, a time when she must decide about her title and seek counsel from trusted advisors.

Throughout the span of three seasons, she blossoms into a confident queen, while also unfolding the heartwarming romance between her and Albert, a man who held her affection until her passing in 1901. By the way, for all you “Outlander” enthusiasts, Nell Hudson features in this series!

Victoria is available to stream on PBS Masterpiece.

The Tudors

The account of Henry VIII is frequently retold, with numerous narratives surrounding his six spouses. “The Tudors” offers yet another perspective on this tale. While there are undeniably some aspects that deviate significantly from historical truth, we can overlook these discrepancies due to the added drama.

The show begins during the later years of Henry and Catherine of Aragon’s marriage. It delves into each of his wives, their children, court scandals, and various other events over a span of four seasons. Fans of Outlander will recognize Maria Doyle Kennedy as she plays Catherine of Aragon in this series.

The Tudors is available to stream on Prime Video.

Versailles

Fancy another journey across to mainland Europe? This time, we’re venturing back to 1667 France, exploring the TV series called “Versailles.” The story revolves around King Louis XIV, who at 28 years old, has solidified his control over France. With ambition in his heart, he plans to construct Versailles – a palace that every noble aspires to inhabit. However, they are unaware that Louis is building it not just for luxury, but also as a means to confine and govern the nobles.

Absolutely, there’s a touch of romance too. We encounter Marie Therese, the queen consort to King Louis, and his mistress, who interestingly is the sister of the English king. There’s deceit, conflict, and many other intriguing elements. This show also features Alexander Vlahos, an actor known from Outlander.

Versailles is on Prime Video, Tubi, and The Roku Channel.

The Secrets of British Castles

If you’re interested in something more historically accurate, I recommend checking out “The Secrets of British Castles,” as it offers insights into some of the castles depicted in the series “The Crown.”

Dan Jones leads captivating explorations of some of the most awe-inspiring castles scattered throughout Great Britain. He delves into the living conditions of past inhabitants, discusses the architectural integrity of these sites, and offers intriguing insights into the historical backgrounds of each location.

The Secrets of British Castles is available on Netflix.
