The collection of games available at the debut of the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t large or abundant, which creates a favorable situation for Sega during the console’s initial weeks. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S is unique as it’s the first major puzzle game on the new Nintendo platform. Although it offers some intriguing concepts, the overall impression left by this enhanced version of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 from 2020 is lackluster.
People who have played Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will have a general understanding of what they’re in for. It blends the traditional Puyo Puyo and Tetris puzzle mechanics, enabling players to dive into one, the other, or even both simultaneously. This fusion of games is an engaging concept, especially for those new to the sequel or its precursor. The game offers a solo Adventure Mode that progressively familiarizes players with both puzzle styles and readies them for other available modes. While the challenges are enjoyable, the storyline doesn’t stand out remarkably. In fact, the corny dialogues and amusing interactions often made me consider skipping the cutscenes more than I wanted to watch them.
In addition to the classic modes from Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, there are some familiar options such as Endless/Marathon for both puzzles, timed challenges, and multiplayer matches where you can either compete against others in Versus or Skill Battles that leverage unique game mechanics and a diverse cast of characters. Regardless of whether you’re more skilled in Puyo Puyo or Tetris, the matches cater to your preferred playstyle and ensure a fair balance.
The unique aspect that makes “2S” seem freshly tailored for the Switch 2 is the innovative Puyo Tetris Doubles mode. This mode supports four players in a 2v2 format, where teams collaborate on the same gameboard, either in Puyo Puyo or Tetris. The experience can be chaotic, as teammates may unintentionally hinder each other. Interestingly, Tetris tends to put teams at a disadvantage due to the potential disarray that ensues when both players aren’t coordinating, while Puyo Puyo players can attempt to establish a mental boundary and focus on creating shapes within their designated zone.
In a fresh twist for The Switch 2 gamers, the new Joy-Con controllers enable an alternative way to play Puyo Puyo or Tetris games. Despite this change feeling distinct, it doesn’t necessarily seem essential or offer an improved gaming experience compared to using the Pro Controller. This raises questions about the need for players to purchase this version when the original Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is still enjoyable and fully playable on The Switch 2. For those intrigued by the prospect of 2v2 battles, it could be worth exploring, but overall, the game remains largely unaltered from its predecessor. Over time, the mouse integration begins to feel more like a hindrance than an asset.
For individuals seeking a fresh puzzle game to enjoy on their sparkling new Switch 2 console, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S is an excellent choice, although it may not represent a groundbreaking leap in the series that has already proven surprisingly enjoyable as a crossover. While it’s not a poorly designed game by any stretch and can be quite fun to play with kids or guests, it might not offer the dramatic evolution some players anticipate.
