As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired the unique blend that Puyo Puyo Tetris offers, reminiscent of the delightful combination of Reese’s peanut butter cups. This harmonious fusion of two gaming greats has been a part of my Nintendo Switch experience since its debut in 2017, making its grand entrance just a couple of months after the console’s launch and establishing itself as an exclusive title.
With the much-anticipated arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 just weeks away, Sega is preparing to unveil a fresh version of their puzzle amalgamation titled Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S. Recently, Shacknews granted me the exciting opportunity to test out one of its innovative game modes on the upcoming console, an experience that brings camaraderie to new, slightly unconventional heights.
Just like the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, this game combines two well-known puzzle crazes. Players can form chains of 4 identical blobs in Puyo Puyo, or clear lines by arranging Tetris blocks. These styles can be played separately or merged in various game settings to produce an unusual, yet entertaining, fusion.
In the upcoming game Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, a fresh Doubles Mode will be included, enabling two friends to collaborate against another pair of competitors. They must decide on a style (either Puyo Puyo or Tetris), but their opponents may opt for something else, leading to intriguing Puyo Puyo versus Tetris matches. The appeal and entertaining chaos of this mode stem from the fact that both players will share a single game board. This means that teammates might inadvertently obstruct each other while arranging their Puyo pieces or Tetriminos, which is likely to occur frequently.
In a doubles match, effective communication is vital for success. This is more straightforward in Puyo Puyo since friends can suggest where to position colored pieces for optimal combinations. Tetris, on the other hand, requires more strategy, especially for players like me who often create gaps for long pieces. The challenge arises when a teammate’s movement of their piece obstructs the incoming long piece. To navigate this issue, it’s recommended to frequently use the Hold function in Tetris to temporarily store the long piece if things don’t go as planned.
As a gamer, I barely got a chance to explore the depths of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S. Sadly, I didn’t get to test out the Skill Battle mode from last year’s edition, which seems more like an RPG. However, there’s plenty to uncover in this game, whether you’re playing solo or with friends online. Some modes even let you choose from a whopping 40 characters! Naturally, Sega being the legendary studio that it is, Sonic the Hedgehog makes an appearance as a special guest character.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 stands out as the first puzzle game available when Nintendo Switch 2 debuts. If you’re eager for a brain-teasing challenge on your new device, this exciting blend of puzzles is scheduled to come out exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, June 5. This coincides perfectly with the console’s launch date.
This sneak peek is derived from an initial Nintendo Switch 2 prototype that was tested personally at Sega of America’s main office in Irvine, California. Keep in mind that the ultimate version could still undergo modifications.
