Puss in Boots: The Last Wish director Joel Crawford has found his next project.
Previously, Crawford and fellow director Januel Mercado were responsible for creating 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. This sequel followed the 2011 film, Puss in Boots, which was a standalone spin-off from the Shrek franchise. The animated movie became an enormous success, earning $485 million globally at the box office. Additionally, it received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.
What is the title and release date of the Puss in Boots: The Last Wish director’s next project?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been announced that Crawford will take on the director role for an upcoming animated film from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, titled “Forgotten Island.” The movie is set to hit theaters on September 25, 2026.
According to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is characterized as a lively and humorous journey through a forgotten, enchanted island steeped in Philippine folklore, where the main characters find themselves stranded.
Further plot details remain under wraps at this time.
On top of writing and directing Forgotten Island, Mercado will be working alongside Crawford. Meanwhile, Mark Swift has been assigned the role of producer.
Prior to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Joel Crawford directed The Croods: A New Age (or The Croods 2), which was released in 2020. He has also worked as a story artist on numerous projects including Bee Movie (2007), Kung Fu Panda (2008), Shrek Forever After (2010), Rise of the Guardians (2012), The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), Trolls (2016), and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019), among others.
On September 25, 2026, there are no other movies scheduled for release. However, the DCU Clayface film is set to premiere about two weeks prior, specifically on September 11. Subsequently, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie will be released on September 18.
