Jon Bernthal is reminiscing about the occasion when he and Tom Holland recorded their Marvel Cinematic Universe audition tapes side by side.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bernthal portrays Frank Castle/The Punisher, and Holland takes on the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Coming soon to theatres next year from Universal Pictures, they’ll appear together in Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of The Odyssey.
What did Jon Bernthal say about filming MCU audition tapes with Tom Holland?
On a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Bernthal shared that he and Holland mutually helped each other with their Marvel Studios audition tapes while they were filming the 2017 Irish medieval film, Pilgrimage.
In a heartfelt statement, Bernthal expressed, “Tom Holland is truly one of the exceptional individuals to have graced our planet. To begin with, let me say that.” He continued, “I can’t express enough praise for this remarkable young man, Tom Holland. I admire him deeply. Around seven or eight years ago, we worked together on a film that was somewhat like The Odyssey; it was a medieval-style journey movie, but it was produced on an incredibly tiny budget – almost nothing compared to its counterparts.” He added, “It was during this production that both Tom and I helped each other with our audition tapes for our respective roles in Spider-Man and Punisher. We actually filmed each other’s auditions on that set.
Bernthal went on to say, “He possessed such determination and conviction, it was truly inspiring. He’d declare, ‘I am Spider-Man.’ You could tell he genuinely thought he had a chance at it. I found myself thinking, ‘There must be countless individuals who aspire to be Spider-Man.’ Despite his exceptional talent, I couldn’t help but think, ‘The odds might not be in your favor.’ Yet, we decided to record the audition.
In addition to being an incredibly talented athlete, he’s capable of performing all those incredible flips for real. During his audition tape, he made a unique entrance by sliding into the scene. I suggested he climb up a wall, perform a double backflip, and then begin the scene. He asked if it was too much, to which I replied that none of the others could pull it off. Remarkably, he did exactly that.
