PS5 Pro fails to fix “fundamental flaw” with Sony’s tech, reveal tech analysts

As a longtime PlayStation enthusiast with a background in tech and video production, I find myself deeply disappointed by the apparent HDMI controller issue plaguing the PlayStation 5 Pro. Having spent countless hours streaming and recording gameplay footage on my high-end 8K TV and capture card setup, this technical flaw is a real blow to my gaming experience.

As a passionate gamer, I couldn’t help but notice the backlash that the PlayStation 5 Pro received during its unveiling due to questionable marketing strategies highlighting minimal improvements on older games. However, it’s essential to mention that the system could potentially be worth the investment given its impressive offerings such as stunning 8K games like Gran Turismo and significant ray-tracing enhancements.

The big PS5 Pro flaw

Apart from the significant CPU bottleneck that hinders the PS5 Pro from achieving substantial performance improvements, one major technical flaw in Sony’s console remains unresolved. Regarding the standard PS5, the PS5 Slim, and now the Pro models, all share a common issue: their HDMI controllers are limited to 32 GBps, which adversely affects their 4K and 8K output quality in various aspects.

According to experts at Digital Foundry who analyze video games and technology, the HDMI controller in the latest PlayStation model appears to be a significant issue or potential weakness in the console’s design. It seems there might be some oddities related to the console’s internal hardware.

According to Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter, there appears to be an issue with the HDMI controller on the standard PlayStation 5, and it seems that this limitation has been carried over to the latest console, as it only supports a 32 GBps bandwidth.

As a tech enthusiast, let me break it down for you: To fully appreciate 8K content at 120Hz refresh rate, you need double the bandwidth compared to 4K. In simpler terms, your display controller needs an upgrade. This is just common sense. However, the way we anticipate this upgrade might surprise you.

Although Sony hasn’t officially confirmed it, tests by Digital Foundry suggest a potential limitation on the HDMI controller of their more powerful console. This limitation seems to enforce an 32 GBps output, which might impact some functionalities for users. Specifically, 8K resolution output will be supported only through 8K TVs and capture devices that incorporate DSC (Digital Stream Compression). However, the majority of users may not experience many restrictions.

Leadbetter stated, “It seems Sony has incorporated compression capabilities into their display controller, though it’s probably only capable of handling up to 32 GBps. The positive aspect is that the display stream compression they use is lossless, meaning no reduction in quality. Moreover, on an 8K compatible TV, you can enjoy full 8K resolution with RGB support at 60Hz and HDR.

For the main consumer, this “fundamental flaw” won’t make a difference to the day to day gaming on Sony’s new console. However, it is a curious restriction placed on the professional-branded machine that doesn’t need to be there.
