PS5 Pro “drop-in replacement” for PSSR is launching next year, confirms Mark Cerny

As a gaming enthusiast diving into the latest tech, I’ve been grappling with the debate over whether the PS5 Pro’s steep price tag justifies its features. However, one thing that has left no room for doubt is the exceptional performance of PSSR. Leveraging the built-in machine learning hardware of this next-gen console, it delivers a stellar upscaling experience, rivaling DLSS in quality among console competitors. But here’s the twist: it’s slated to be replaced, making now an opportune moment for gamers like me to witness its brilliance firsthand.

In simpler terms, while the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 uses a customized version of Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), Sony is collaborating with AMD to incorporate an optimized version of FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) into PlayStation 5 Pro as a convenient solution for developers to easily integrate.

PS5 Pro FSR 4 support drops next year

In conversation with Tom’s Guide, PlayStation 5 system architect Mark Cerny clarified that the novel image upscaling technology serves as a straightforward substitute for the existing PSSR (PlayStation Standby Power Saving). This means developers can easily switch their current upscaling method with this improved, higher-quality alternative.

According to Cerney’s latest update, the anticipated FSR 4 enhancement for PS5 Pro is scheduled to roll out in 2026. However, no specific release date has been provided yet for when gamers can look forward to experiencing this upgrade.

Indeed, since the standard PS5 doesn’t have advanced machine learning hardware, it won’t come with a specialized image upscaler feature.

AMD’s FSR technology was significantly outperformed by DLSS until the emergence of FSR 4. This recent iteration of AMD’s machine learning image enhancement tool, often referred to as “super resolution”, has brought a significant improvement for PC gamers, offering improved image sharpness, smoother gameplay, and reduced image distortion during movement.

It’s uncertain at this point how well FSR 4 will perform on the PS5 Pro, given that its best performance is observed on PC. However, there are also lower-quality versions of the technology designed for less powerful hardware or resource-intensive games. DLSS serves a similar purpose by adjusting performance levels, and we’ve witnessed some performance issues in games like Fast Fusion on Nintendo Switch 2.

Regardless of the circumstances, Sony’s decision to abandon PlayStation 4’s Super Resolution (PSSR) technology in favor of Fidelity Scalable Ray Tracing (FSR 4) is probably beneficial for PS5 Pro users. Although there isn’t an official list of games that will utilize this technology yet, it’s reasonable to anticipate improved visual quality when it becomes available next year.
