PS3 emulation on PlayStation 5 nearing reality as Sony partner discusses prototype functionality

As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has spent countless hours exploring the vast library of games from Sony’s last-gen console, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of PS3 emulation on PS5. The idea that I might one day be able to play my favorite PS3 games natively on my PS5 is almost too good to be true.

Implicit Conversions’ recent studio roadmap update, which includes references to PlayStation 3 games running on its Syrup Engine, has given me a glimmer of hope that this dream might become a reality. The thought of being able to enjoy these classic titles with trophies and PSN interfacing is almost too enticing to resist.

Of course, it’s important to remember that this isn’t an official announcement that PS3 emulation on PS5 is coming anytime soon. But for those of us who don’t want to stream PS3 games or can’t afford a beefy PC to handle the emulation, every little bit of progress brings us one step closer to our goal.

As for my unannounced joke, let me just say this: If they ever do manage to make it happen, I hope they include a “PlayStation 1.5” mode that lets me play PS3 games at a slower speed so I can finally catch up on all the sleep I missed while trying to beat Shadow of the Colossus for the umpteenth time.

At present, playing PS3 games on PC is quite popular, but for PS5 gamers, they need to stream the older console onto their high-end devices, even with the superior specifications of the PS5 Pro. However, Implicit Conversions, a company that brings classic PlayStation games to current Sony consoles, is aiming to offer genuine PS3 emulation in the future.

PS3 emulation on PS5 nears reality?

According to Reddit’s findings, Implicit Conversions has revised their studio plan to incorporate mentions of PlayStation 3 games being compatible with their “Syrup Engine.” This engine serves as a versatile tool, enabling classic PlayStation games to operate smoothly on contemporary devices, offering additional features like trophies and PSN connectivity.

The updated blueprint now includes a “Daydreaming About” segment, which outlines aspirational objectives for the studio. Specifically, they aim to introduce high-quality, authentic PS3 emulation on current-generation PlayStation systems using their Syrup Engine at some point in the future.

The studio stated, “We’re exploring and designing a potential PlayStation 3 emulator for Syrup.

Apart from revealing details about its Syrup Engine, Implicit Conversions unveiled their ongoing plans as well. This includes the porting of Fear Effect, Fighting Force, and Fighting Force 2 to Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Steam. Additionally, the studio is developing an unnamed PS1 title with a Japanese translation for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.

While it’s not yet confirmed that PS3 emulation on PS5 will happen imminently, this recent statement does provide some optimism for gamers who prefer playing their PS3 titles directly on their consoles rather than streaming them. Given that the PlayStation 3 is now nearly two decades old, it seems long overdue to have a chance to enjoy these classic games on a contemporary platform.
