Producer exposes dark truth about drug culture in Malayalam cinema: ‘Separate rooms are allotted for this purpose’

Discussion about substance abuse in the Malayalam film industry has been ongoing for quite some time. However, it gained significant focus when Vincy Aloshious alleged that Shine Tom Chacko had harassed him while under the influence. Despite no further legal action being taken, this incident sparked a renewed conversation. In 2023, Sandra Thomas spoke out about widespread drug use. Discussing with Onmanorama, the producer shared concerning patterns persisting within the Malayalam film world. Sandra Thomas suggested that film organizations should have firmly addressed drug abuse in films long ago. She highlighted that a substantial number of individuals working on set are fully aware of this problem.

In her own words, “Money is specifically being allocated, and separate areas are designated for this activity. Nevertheless, the industry argues that it should not be tarnished as a whole because of the actions of a few individuals.

Sandra stated that she had heard Listin say something similar lately, and she wondered if individuals like him were genuinely oblivious to the fact. Sandra asserted that drugs have become openly accessible in movie sets and are being used by people across various genders and social standings.

Sandra mentioned that producers hesitate to voice concerns because they’re afraid it could delay their projects. If an issue arises on set, filming comes to a halt. Moreover, damaging an actor’s reputation can be detrimental. Why make a movie with someone if their favorable standing is tarnished?

The producer further emphasized the necessity of involving female producers within the Internal Complaints Committee on movie sets. She is convinced that their participation would expedite appropriate actions and guarantee fair treatment for those who have experienced sexual harassment.
