In a most unfortunate turn of events, the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek finds itself in the crosshairs of a veritable storm of criticism, primarily concerning its rather cavalier approach to privacy and security. The United States, along with its loyal sidekick Australia, has taken a keen interest in this tech debacle. Meanwhile, the US Navy, in a move that can only be described as a parental warning, has advised its personnel against the use of DeepSeek, citing security and ethical concerns. In a rather stern email, they explicitly prohibited the use of this AI tool. Following this revelation, shares of AI chipmakers Nvidia and Broadcom plummeted by 17% on Monday, effectively erasing a staggering $800 billion in market value. One might say the Nasdaq took a rather unfortunate tumble, down by 3.1% as a result.

Meanwhile, Marina Zhang, an associate professor at the University of Technology Sydney, informed the BBC that in China, DeepSeek’s progress is celebrated as a shining beacon of the country’s burgeoning tech prowess. The company’s success is heralded as a sign of China’s new era of innovation, led by a sprightly younger generation of business leaders.

“The company’s success is seen as a validation of China’s Innovation 2.0, a new era of homegrown technological leadership driven by a younger generation of entrepreneurs,” Zhang said.
