Prithviraj Sukumaran on ‘people having a problem’ with Unni Mukundan’s Marco: ‘They never fooled you…’

In the year 2024, Unni Mukundan’s Marco marked a unique approach in Malayalam cinema by presenting an innovative filmmaking style. This movie gained popularity due to its unsettling violence themes, yet it garnered substantial box office success. However, the Haneef Adeni-directed film faced significant backlash and criticism for its overly violent content.

Now, the filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, who was once an actor, has voiced his thoughts about the aggressive aspect of the movie.

In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Prithviraj voiced his support for Marco, asserting that the creators did not deceive the viewers. Instead, they presented the movie precisely as promised.

The actor who portrays Lucifer casually labeled Unni Mukundan as a ‘cherished friend’. He further mentioned that it seemed unnecessary for viewers to criticize the graphic violence depicted in the movie after having watched it, because from the start, the film was marketed as ‘nothing more than a violent production’.

He feels that there’s no issue with a movie such as Marco, because it didn’t claim to be anything other than what it is. I have a personal connection with the creators, and I was aware from the start that the film would focus on intense violence. The initial announcement made it clear that it would feature unprecedented levels of violence, an extreme take on voyeurism within violence, essentially a super-charged slasher film.

Prithviraj commented, “They consistently maintained that it was a very violent movie. They didn’t deceive you by making you believe it was about something else. They repeatedly stated it was violent… Then you go see it and criticize the violence? Really now.

Marco’s earnings at the box office following its theatrical release were extraordinarily successful, and similarly, the reaction it garnered when it premiered as an action thriller on SonyLIV was highly favorable.

The Unni Mukundan film was not immune to criticism and even faced a ban on its satellite streaming rights by the CBFC. Additionally, it was advised that the movie should only be screened for family audiences, as per guidelines set by the broadcasting board.
