1998 saw the release of Practical Magic, a movie adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name. The story revolves around the Owens sisters, who must use their magical powers to combat the malevolent spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend, who had been menacing them. Despite mixed critical reception, it has garnered a significant following over the years.
In the movie, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), who belong to a magical family, have generally stayed away from practicing magic. However, when Gillian’s abusive partner, Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), dies suddenly, the Owens sisters feel compelled to learn advanced magic quickly. As policeman Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) begins to suspect something, the sisters attempt to bring Angelov back to life – unknowingly summoning an evil spirit that could potentially destroy their family lineage.
Additionally, the movie featured acting talents like Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, and Aidan Quinn, joining Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The director of this production was Griffin Dunne, with a screenplay penned by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman, and Adam Brooks.
