The cast of Practical Magic 2 doesn’t include one star of the original movie.
In June of 2024, it was confirmed that a new installment of “Practical Magic” is being developed. Sandra Bullock will once again take on the character of Sally Owens, while Nicole Kidman will be back as Gillian “Gilly” Owens in this upcoming film.
Who won’t be returning for Practical Magic 2?
It turns out that Evan Rachel Wood won’t reprise her role as Kylie Owens in Practical Magic 2. She expressed on social platforms that she was willing to return, but unfortunately, the studio decided against it.
Wood clarified through Entertainment Weekly that he wasn’t invited to return for the Practical Magic sequel. He expressed his willingness, even if it was just a single scene or line, but was informed they were recasting. He regrets not being able to meet fans’ expectations, as it was beyond his control or decision. If given the chance, he would have gladly reconnected with his on-screen sisters.
In 1998, the movie Practical Magic hit the screens. This film was helmed by director Griffin Dunne, with an ensemble cast that included Goran Visnjic as James “Jimmy” Angelov, Stockard Channing as Frances Owens, Dianne Wiest as Bridget “Jet” Owens, Aidan Quinn as Gary Hallet, and Caprice Benedetti portraying Maria Owens.
The movie describes Sally and Gillian Owens, who were born into a magical family but generally shied away from using magic. However, when Gillian’s abusive boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, suddenly passes away, the Owens sisters feel compelled to learn powerful spells quickly. As policeman Gary Hallet starts investigating suspiciously, the sisters attempt to bring Angelov back to life – unknowingly transferring an evil spirit into his corpse that may ultimately destroy their family lineage.
In the upcoming sequel to Practical Magic, originally starring Channing and Wiest, will join once more. Additionally, new faces such as Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod have been added to the cast. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced a release date for this film: September 18, 2026.
