The sequel to “Practical Magic” is making progress at Warner Bros., with the studio considering Susanne Bier, director of “Bird Box,” for the role of director.
In 1998, a movie adaptation titled Practical Magic hit the screens. This film was inspired by Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name. Griffin Dunne took on the role of director for this production, with Sandra Bullock portraying Sally Owens and Nicole Kidman bringing Gillian Owens to life.
By June 2024, it became public knowledge that the production of Practical Magic 2 had been confirmed, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman set to resume their characters once more.
Since that time, there hasn’t been much news on the project; but now, Deadline claims Warner Bros. is negotiating with Bier for the chance to direct the sequel.
What else do we know about Practical Magic 2?
For the script of Practical Magic 2, the duties were taken on by Akiva Goldsman – a writer who previously collaborated on the initial film. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will be producing this project along with Denise Di Novi.
In 2018, Bier collaborated with Bullock on the Netflix movie “Bird Box.” Additionally, she directed Nicole Kidman in the HBO miniseries “The Undoing,” which debuted in October 2020, as well as “The Perfect Couple” for Netflix.
Apart from his work on The Night Manager (2016) and The First Lady (2022), Susanne Bier’s filmography boasts a rich collection of films such as Family Matters (1993), Once in a Lifetime (2000), Brothers (2004), After the Wedding (2006), Things We Lost in the Fire (2007), Love Is All You Need (2012), and Serena (2014), along with several other titles.
A release date for Practical Magic has not yet been announced.
In the meantime, you can stream Practical Magic by renting or buying it on services like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and other similar platforms.
In the movie, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), who belong to a mystical family, have generally shied away from using magic. However, when Gillian’s abusive partner, Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), passes away mysteriously, the Owens sisters feel compelled to quickly learn the darker aspects of magic. As police officer Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) starts asking questions, the sisters find themselves in a race against time to bring back Angelov – unknowingly releasing an evil spirit from his body that could potentially extinguish their family’s lineage.
