Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Trailer Leaks, Says Cartoon ‘Whitewashed Us’

The live-action Powerpuff Girls trailer has leaked online.

In 2020, it was announced by The CW that they were planning a live-action series based on The Powerpuff Girls. By early 2021, Chloe Bennett, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault were cast as Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup respectively. This adult-targeted show, called Powerpuff, filmed a pilot episode in the spring of 2021, but it never made it to air. However, you can now watch the trailer for this series below.

What happens in the Powerpuff Girls live-action trailer?

The story opens by depicting Professor Utonium (played by Donald Faison) forming his extraordinary superhero team, the Powerpuff Girls. They were responsible for safeguarding Townsville throughout their tenure. Yet as they matured, the girls encountered typical adolescent struggles such as anxiety, stress, and issues with alcohol. Unintentionally, while still teenagers, they took the life of Mojo, who was actually a human, not a monkey.

Following the accident, Blossom fled, Buttercup chose a career as a firefighter, and Bubbles sought stardom on Hollywood’s streets. Seven years down the line, they are disenchanted twenty-somethings with no desire for crime fighting. With Jojo, Mojo’s son, as mayor, they reluctantly come together to confront a fresh menace. The trailer also takes a humorous jab at the cartoon, with Buttercup commenting that it “oversimplified” their group dynamics.

Filming of the initial episode started in April 2021. However, by May 2021, the CW decided not to proceed with the pilot but announced intentions to revamp the show. Later in August 2021, Bennett decided to leave the series. The development process continued for another two years before it was eventually canceled in May 2023.

The Powerpuff Girls originates from Craig McCracken’s animated show on Cartoon Network. A live-action adaptation of the series was developed by writers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, with Diablo Cody also serving as an executive producer. Maggie Kiley directed the initial episode, and Warner Bros. Television was responsible for producing the ultimately unsuccessful series.
