Summary
- Production of the current gas-powered Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman models is set to end by October 2025
- Limited stock will be available into early 2026
- The planned all-electric Boxster and Cayman, initially slated for 2026, have been officially delayed until at least 2027
By the year 2025, Porsche plans to stop selling its iconic Boxster and Cayman models powered by gasoline engines. These models, famous for their thrilling performance, are expected to vanish from the market permanently.
The manufacturing of the existing gasoline-powered Boxster and Cayman models is planned to cease by October 2025, with only a small amount of stock likely to be available up until early 2026 for regions like North America. These models have already been discontinued in Europe as of mid-2024 due to the implementation of new regulations.
Originally set for a 2026 debut, the upcoming electric versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman were initially slated for release in 2026. However, Porsche has now formally delayed the electric launch, with the new models not expected until at least 2027. The delays are primarily due to technical hurdles in battery development, specifically problems with a key battery supplier, Northvolt, who reportedly faced bankruptcy.
Apart from battery availability, a slower-than-anticipated global acceptance of electric vehicles has influenced Porsche’s updated plans as well. Consequently, the 718 series will transition to an electric model eventually, but there may be a significant void in Porsche’s compact sports car range once the existing models are discontinued. Porsche intends to preserve the essence and driving performance of their conventional 718 counterparts in these upcoming electric vehicles, which will be developed using a new PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture. Both rear-wheel drive and potent all-wheel drive versions will be provided for these electric 718s.
