As a veteran gamer who’s seen countless reality shows and virtual idol groups come and go, I must say that “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE” has got me hooked! The intense audition process, grueling training, and nail-biting eliminations are reminiscent of those survival games I used to play back in the day.
In Netflix’s fresh music documentary series titled “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE“, we journey through the creation of a unique worldwide girl band that was brought together by a collaboration between HYBE and Geffen Records. This six-member group goes by the name KATSEYE, and their official fan base is known as EYEKONS.
Initially, I didn’t become part of KATSEYE all at once, as revealed in the docuseries. Instead, it was an extended journey that spanned over years, involving over 120,000 young aspirants vying for a spot. From this massive pool of talent, HYBE and Geffen narrowed down their potential candidates to just 20 individuals. These lucky few were subjected to an arduous K-Pop training and development regimen aimed at honing the skills they’d need to shine brightly. Once this grueling training phase was over, we then progressed to the next stage: a survival show titled The Debut: Dream Academy.
In this survival reality show, competitors faced three distinct tasks and their performance was assessed by executives from HYBE and Geffen Records, plus fans. The outcome of each mission influenced whether a contestant remained on the program. However, since only six members could form the group in the end, there were numerous eliminations throughout the competition.
Below, we shared all the eliminations in each episode of Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE on Netflix.
Spoilers from Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE ahead!
Episode 1
Prior to revealing which contestants qualified for the survival show in the docuseries, there were two preliminary eliminations in earlier episodes. One of these eliminations occurred in episode 1, where the 17-year-old contestant Abby from Colorado was sent home. Despite her obvious talent, the executives at HYBE and Geffen felt that her skills weren’t quite good enough. Consequently, they decided to terminate her participation in the show.
Episode 3
In the competition, it wasn’t Naisha’s lack of skills that led to her elimination; instead, she breached the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) all contestants were required to sign prior to the show. Specifically, she posted a video of herself singing an original song on Instagram, which was viewable by people outside of the program due to her followers, ultimately resulting in her disqualification.
Episode 5
In the fifth installment of the survival program, the competition gets underway, and the female contestants embark on their initial mission. Regrettably, two participants, Adela and Hinari, were ousted in this episode. Adela’s elimination was largely due to insufficient fan support, whereas Hinari’s departure stemmed from her ongoing need to improve her abilities.
Episode 6
Now it’s time for round two, and the competitors are eager to perform their best to avoid elimination. For this task, they must sing and dance to tunes by the HYBE girl group Le Sserafim. In the end, four contestants were removed from the competition: Brooklyn, Karlee, Iliya, and Mei.
Episode 7
Following the unexpected turn of events in episode 6, many contestants seem less enthusiastic about the competition now. Among them is Lexie. She found the show’s dynamic of pitting girls against each other unsettling and expressed her discomfort. This dissatisfaction led to her skipping rehearsals, a situation Missy picked up on. After a conversation with Lexie, they mutually decided that it was best for her to step down from the program.
Episode 8
In the kickoff of episode 8, I discover who’s advanced to the top 10 and who’s been eliminated from the game. It’s Ezrela, Lara, Emily, Yoonchae, Sophie, Daniela, Megan, Marquise, Manon, and Samara who have secured their spots in the top 10. Unfortunately, UA, Nayoung, and Celeste are out of the competition now. Later on, we witness the top 10 giving one final performance together before the ultimate KATSEYE lineup is revealed.
Ultimately, Sophia, Lara, Yoonchae, Megan, Daniela, and Manon were unveiled as the inaugural members of the global girl group KATSEYE, a collaboration between HYBE and Geffen Records. Unfortunately, Ezrela, Emily, Marquise, and Samara did not secure a spot in the group.
No contestants were eliminated in episodes 2 and 4.
Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE is now available to stream on Netflix.
