In a move that can only be described as both brave and slightly absurd, the Polkadot Blockchain Academy (PBA) has decided to launch its first educational course for our beloved policymakers. Yes, you heard that right! They’re calling it Blockchain Basics, which sounds like a title for a children’s book, but I digress. This course aims to arm civil servants and government officials with the knowledge they need to create a stable crypto policy framework. Because, you know, it’s not like they’ve been winging it for years. 🙄
For ages, the reason behind the snail-paced implementation of crypto policies has been the glaring lack of industry knowledge. Who knew? Polkadot is stepping in to save the day, or at least to offer a crash course in blockchain technology to those who probably still think “mining” is something you do with a pickaxe in a video game.
Mark your calendars, folks! The Polkadot Blockchain Academy is hosting this three-day extravaganza in Zug, Switzerland, from April 6 to April 8. Yes, Zug! The land of chocolate, cheese, and now, apparently, crypto enlightenment. Leading this merry band of UK MPs will be Dr. Lisa Cameron, the founder of the UKUS Crypto Alliance and a former MP who has been pushing for crypto growth in the UK. She’s like the crypto fairy godmother we never knew we needed. 🧚♀️
“Given the prominent role that blockchain technology is poised to play in the UK’s tech sector, it is essential that policymakers are equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions. Polkadot Blockchain Academy’s inaugural course offers a valuable opportunity for MPs to gain firsthand insights into the real-world applications of Web3. I’m pleased to lead this delegation as we engage with experts and explore how blockchain can contribute to innovation and economic growth.”
Polkadot to Cater to UK’s Growing Blockchain Ambitions
Meanwhile, UK lawmakers are busy trying to get their act together on crypto regulations. Just this month, crypto exchange Coinbased managed to snag a license to offer full crypto services in the region. And let’s not forget Uphold, which is all set to offer staking services to UK customers. Because nothing says “we’re serious about crypto” like a bunch of politicians trying to figure out how to regulate it.
As the landscape improves—slowly but surely—Polkadot is seizing the moment by educating policymakers and redirecting their attention to the blockchain industry. A delegation of British Members of Parliament is gearing up to attend the “Blockchain Basics for Policymakers” course, which will cover critical topics like regulation and the implementation of “guardrails” for AI and autonomous agents. Because if there’s one thing we need, it’s more regulations for technology that’s already confusing enough. 🤔
Joining this first institutional pilot of the course will be Chrissy Hill, Chief Legal Officer and interim COO at Parity Technologies. She’s probably wondering how she ended up here, too.
“Policymakers play a crucial role in shaping the future of blockchain, yet have empirically lacked access to structured education on its technical and regulatory foundations. Polkadot Blockchain Academy is committed to bridging this gap, ensuring that decision-makers have the resources they need to craft practical policies that foster innovation while maintaining safeguards,” Hill stated. And let’s hope they remember to take notes! 📝
