Actress Natasha Lyonne, famously known from Poker Face, is joining forces with British actress Brit Marling (The OA, A Murder at the End of the World) and renowned computer scientist Jaron Lanier for her first venture into feature film directing titled Uncanny Valley.
At Asteria Studios, a production company specializing in ethically sourced AI technology, it was recently announced that the actress will be producing a unique film project. This upcoming production, known as a “hybrid film,” will blend conventional live-action cinematography with cutting-edge generative AI technology. Chloë Sevigny, who co-founded Asteria Studios with Bryn Mooser, is leading this innovative venture.
What is Uncanny Valley about?
The movie, titled Uncanny Valley, revolves around a teenage girl named Mila, whose perception of reality becomes questionable following a glitch in a widely used augmented reality game. A spokesperson from Asteria (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter) explains that the production will seamlessly combine classic storytelling methods with advanced AI technologies to generate an innovative and groundbreaking cinematic adventure.
The announcement comes after the widely discussed introduction of AI in movie production, raising concerns among critics about its potential impact on genuine storytelling. Nevertheless, as stated by THR, Mooser emphasized that this project remains infused with a human touch.
According to Mooser, if technology is led by artists rather than the other way around, it opens up possibilities for groundbreaking and unconventional developments.
Despite the fact that Uncanny Valley is her first feature film as a director, Lyonne has previously directed episodes for Orange Is the New Black, Russian Doll, and Poker Face – shows where she also acted.
This actress has appeared in numerous films and TV series such as Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Dennis the Menace, American Pie, Scary Movie 2, Blade: Trinity, Girl Most Likely, Addicted to Fresno, Sleeping With Other People, The Intervention, Jack Goes Home, Girlfriend’s Day, Ad Astra, Uncut Gems, His Three Daughters, and The United States vs. Billie Holiday, just to name a few. Her next role will be in the upcoming series titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Other details about Uncanny Valley remain under wraps, including the release date.
