As a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia mixed with a hint of concern as I read about the legal battle between Pocketpair and Nintendo over Palworld. It’s not every day we see such high-profile disputes in the world of video games, especially when it comes to something as iconic as Pokémon.
After Nintendo sued Palworld developer Pocketpair, Pocketpair revealed details about the lawsuit. According to documents shared by Pocketpair, Nintendo claims that Pocketpair infringed on three different patents owned by Nintendo. The lawsuit aims to win damages amounting to approximately 5 million yen for both Nintendo and The Nintendo Company.
This week on its website, Pocketpair disseminated information about Nintendo’s ongoing lawsuit, outlining the conditions set by both Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. The lawsuits are centered around patents, namely JP7545191, JP7493117, and JP7528390, which all pertain to game mechanics for collecting creatures. Specifically, the first two patents focus on the functionality and aiming systems for tossed capture items within a virtual environment, while the third patent deals with mechanics concerning rideable characters.

Nintendo is pursuing a compensation of 10 million yen (approximately $64,000 USD each) for itself and The Pokemon company, due to patent infringement. This amount includes damages, additional fees, and late payment penalties. On the other hand, Pocketpair has maintained its stance that it will contest the lawsuits in court, reaffirming its initial position when the lawsuit was initially announced.
Pocketpair plans to uphold our stance in this matter by taking further legal actions.
It looks like Pocketpair and Nintendo might end up in a legal dispute. Keep an eye on this space as we’ll bring you more news about it right here on Shacknews.
