PlayStation wants to patent “rewind feature” for players to save their game

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the concept of Sony patenting a new feature for game controllers that allows for rewinding gameplay has piqued my interest. In my early years of gaming, there were countless times when I wished for the ability to restart at a certain point in a game after being defeated by a boss or falling prey to a poorly placed trap.

Instead of the conventional method of saving games being entirely novel, imagine Sony rebranding it with a fresh title and incorporating a trendy control button for the feature.

Have you ever found yourself wishing, during a challenging game, that you could go back in time a bit and start over after encountering a tough boss or stepping on an unfortunate bomb? It’d be great if there was a method to rewind the game a few moments before such an event occurred, giving us another chance, right?

Indeed, it’s possible to solve the issue by simply saving the game first and then reloading from a safe file, but Sony prefers a different approach.

PlayStation to patent… Saving?

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited about the potential of Sony developing a new controller feature, allowing me, in the heat of gameplay, to hit a button and wind back my progress to any previous moment. Imagine the possibilities!

Initially discovered by Tech4Gamers, Sony had filed a patent for a novel feature back in the year 2023. However, it’s only now that the details of this patent have been made public. The design includes plans for a “game play rewind” function and “user-triggered bookmarks”.

Sony is considering introducing a new feature on PlayStation controllers, which allows players to rewind their game to a specific point in their gameplay – essentially allowing them to save and load their game. Additionally, there would be instances where the system automatically saves these points for you – essentially auto-saving.

We’re uncertain about the response of developers regarding this new feature. Rolling back critical decisions in games based on player actions at specific instances might significantly undermine the overall gameplay experience. If players can effortlessly revert their choices, then the importance and impact of every decision would diminish.

Even though Sony has invested significantly in this patent, it appears they are confident that the proposed feature would be beneficial. However, it’s worth noting that many gaming industry patents don’t end up being used, which leads one to ponder if Sony might realize that a similar function already exists and abandon the project altogether.

What do you think about this patent? Would you use this feature?
