PlayStation Store price hikes kick off early as Sony continues to “maximise profitability”

Coming up soon on PlayStation are many exciting games, with Death Stranding 2 having just been released and Ghost of Yotei set for release in a few months. These games look promising, but they come at a time when video games are becoming increasingly costly. The upcoming GTA 6 from Take-Two Interactive has people concerned about price increases, but before that, Microsoft and Nintendo have already raised prices. Now, Sony is following suit by increasing the prices on the PlayStation Store earlier than expected as part of their strategy to “maximize profitability.

Sony increases PlayStation Store prices early

A Brazilian gaming platform called Gamevicio claims that Sony has unexpectedly raised the prices of games available on the PlayStation Network (PSN) store. The increase was originally anticipated in September, but it appears that the changes have been made earlier.

According to a statement from Sony Interactive Entertainment, they’ve adjusted prices for content on the PlayStation Store because of tough market conditions, such as changing exchange rates. This adjustment has led to an increase in game and additional content availability for users in Brazil. The pricing changes differ by region and are influenced by the present economic situation.

Examples of price increases on the Brazilian PSN store can be found below:

  • WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers – R$249,50 → R$339,90
  • The Outer Worlds 2 – R$399,90 → R$455,90
  • Silent Hill f – R$349,90 → R$399,90
  • Ninja Gaiden 4 – R$349,90 → R$399,90
  • Lost Soul Aside – R$299,90 → R$339,90
  • Hell is Us – R$299,90 → R$339,90
  • Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – R$ 349,90 → R$ 399,90
  • The Last of Us Part I – R$349,90 → R$ 399,90
  • Astro Bot – R$299,90 → R$ 339,90
  • Demon’s Souls – R$349,90 → R$ 399,90

Alongside the previous information, it’s been noted that there have been increases in the prices of games on the PSN store in Turkey. This is an extension of the 55% rise for Turkey, which was part of the PS Plus price adjustments that took place in April for new subscribers and will now affect existing subscribers’ upcoming bills. Other countries that experienced PS Plus price increases earlier this year include Canada, Australia, and many more.

It’s uncertain whether the increase in PSN store prices will spread elsewhere, but it appears plausible considering that AAA games are gradually moving towards a standard selling price of $80. However, it’s not just the cost at the PSN store that PlayStation users should be concerned about; Sony has also hinted at potential increases for the PS Plus service.

Speaking about potential future price hikes for PS Plus, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hideaki Nishino, mentioned that they aim to optimize their profits. This is due to observing a growing trend among subscribers who are opting for their Premium and Extra plans, which currently make up around 38% of their total subscriber base.

There’s concern that we might see further increases in PS Plus prices and hikes on the PSN store for other regions, but it seems more a question of when compared to if. It’s unfortunate, as the trend suggests gaming is becoming increasingly expensive. However, Shuhei Yoshida has argued that $80 games are still remarkably affordable overall.
