Approximately 2,456 out of the total 5,381 developers who worked on Cyberpunk 2077 were dedicated to localization. Sony is developing an intelligent tool aimed at resolving one of localization’s most complex issues: synchronizing characters’ mouth movements with translated dialogue. Unlike manual synchronization, this system scrutinizes phonemes, the basic components of spoken language, to determine how well the new dialogue fits. It provides a matching score, indicating potential areas of concern for developers. Additionally, it can automatically suggest adjustments or modify facial animations to improve the fit, thus reducing the need for manual frame-by-frame lip synchronization adjustments. This allows developers to concentrate on gameplay and story development, ultimately providing players with a more seamless, natural experience in any language they prefer.
Discussing patents, it’s worth mentioning that Sony owns a patent from 2009 for interactive advertisements, where viewers might need to verbally respond, such as saying “McDonald’s” to bypass an ad. Although this idea has not been realized yet, the patent will remain active until 2029. It’s common for companies like Sony to have numerous patents without bringing them to life – in fact, they hold over 95,000 patents worldwide, with more than 78% still active.
