After sharing theories about Bethesda’s remaster of their highly acclaimed fourth edition, the long wait has come to an end. Yet, numerous players have been encountering issues with performance even when using the suggested hardware. On the other hand, some players are enjoying the game as originally intended. Reddit users are disclosing their hardware specifications and sharing their experiences. For additional insights, explore the article further, including a self-test.
A New Era
Spectators were left in disbelief when Bethesda not just unveiled The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, but released it on the same day. In no time at all, the game drew a whopping 190,000 concurrent players on Steam. It’s also accessible instantly on Microsoft’s Game Pass, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. To call the game a hit would be an understatement. Players received exactly what they desired: a refurbished version of Oblivion that remains incredibly faithful to its original form. However, it appears not everyone has been able to experience the game as hoped: Numerous players are reporting subpar performance even with the recommended hardware for Steam.
Criticism Of Unreal Engine 5 Continues
Users anticipate seamless gameplay with top-tier graphics using the most advanced hardware, yet Unreal Engine 5 faces criticism for being underoptimized and complex to grasp. The question arises: why do gaming experiences vary significantly among users with comparable hardware?
Player Reports And Self-Test
In a Reddit discussion, gamers share their equipment and their gaming experiences up to now. Surprisingly, players with similar hardware specifications have varying performance results, with some encountering frustrating freezes while others enjoy smooth gameplay. Some media outlets criticize the game as underwhelming due to these problems. To get a clearer picture, we decided to conduct our own tests.
We experimented with the game using various types of equipment. Here’s a look at our equipment and the suggested system specifications for reference:

We gave the game a go on diverse hardware setups. Here’s what we used, along with the recommended system specs for comparison purposes:
Recommended Hardware (by Steam)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, Intel Core i5-10600K
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800XT oder NVIDIA RTX 2080
- RAM: 32 GB
His PC:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950x3D
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super
- RAM: 64GB DDR5
- 1440p Display
My PC:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800XT
- RAM: 32GB DDR5
- 1080p Display
His Test
Initially, we played the game on his PC using a 4K resolution setting. Interestingly, the “Medium” graphics setting was pre-selected even though the system requirements suggested otherwise. Consequently, we first attempted to play the game at this medium setting. Unfortunately, Frame Generation wasn’t an option as his GPU didn’t support it yet. Upon exiting the sewers, we were taken aback by the game’s subpar performance. We moved around at approximately 30 frames per second, and it soon became evident that playing the game would be challenging. Lowering the graphics to “Low” setting did little to improve the performance. Unfortunately, due to time limitations, we haven’t had a chance to test the game on a 1080p resolution with his hardware yet. However, we couldn’t conceal our feelings of disappointment.
My Test
After experiencing a minor setback, I couldn’t help but wonder if I would face performance issues similar to those I had encountered. Given that my PC sports newer hardware, albeit not top-of-the-line, I was curious to find out. Unlike some users, I currently possess only a Full HD monitor, which has sufficed for me thus far. Initially, the game automatically set itself to an “Ultra” preset, a choice that prompted me to create a sly Khajiit character to assess the game’s performance on my system. To my astonishment, I found no frame rate drops even as I exited the last sewer gate. After roaming around the world for several minutes, defeating a few enemies, and exploring the city, I decided to deactivate the frame generation that had been running since the start. I anticipated laggy gameplay when my FPS dipped to 40-60, but to my astonishment, the game ran so smoothly that I barely noticed any difference if I hadn’t been checking the FPS display.
Conclusion
It was surprising to discover that the game ran flawlessly on my computer, yet was nearly unplayable for him. However, some gamers find the advancements in games using Unreal Engine 5 and ray tracing technology disappointing due to the high cost of the latest NVIDIA graphics cards. Seeing a once high-performing system struggle even with low settings can be frustrating for many. Here’s hoping that minor adjustments will be made to ensure more gamers can appreciate the improved and magical world of Cyrodiil.
Is the game performing optimally on your system? Can you suggest any tips or techniques you’ve discovered to enhance the game’s smoothness?
