Pizza Bandit fuses Gears of War and Overcooked into a delicious slice of New York pie

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Pizza Bandit has left an indelible mark on me. It’s not every day you come across a game that seamlessly blends elements from two of your favorites – Gears of War and Overcooked, with a dash of time travel for good measure.

Among the longstanding customs at PAX, there’s a popular practice of relaxing in the press room during breaks, allowing your pets to quieten down, making new acquaintances, and catching up with old friends while discussing the most exciting games on display. This year, a title seemed to be frequently mentioned – Pizza Bandit – and everyone I spoke to emphasized that it would perfectly suit my tastes

It’s accurate to say so. In simpler terms, Pizza Bandit is a blend of the Horde mode from Gears of War and Overcooked. Additionally, there’s an element of time travel involved. This might seem quite extraordinary, but it manages to come together effectively. Most importantly, it’s incredibly enjoyable

In a different group, I spent time alongside Pizza Bandit and three other teammates. After being assigned to the same squad, we spent a few moments deciding on weapons and personalizing our characters. I accessorized my bounty hunter with a chef’s hat and ninja mask, then adjusted my equipment – opting for an assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, katana for close combat, deployable turrets, and a disco ball grenade that attracts enemies before detonating. If fortune had favored me in another reality, I would have selected a giant pizza cutter as my melee weapon, but alas, this is not the timeline for it. As we say, “So it goes.” With our team fully equipped, we boarded a dropship and were transported to our destination

In a different setting, my team found ourselves inside a pizzeria as part of our assignment. Our task was straightforward: create care packages filled with pizza, beverages, and ammunition for our allies from alternate realities, then send them on their way while fending off waves of reapers intent on wiping us out. It’s much like the game Overcooked; you must complete accurate orders. Each box should contain ammo, but substituting soda for beer would spoil your order and force a restart. Similarly, you need to prepare the correct type of pizza – that means combining dough, cheese, and either mushrooms or pepperoni. Deliver the wrong variety, and you’re out of luck. Overcook it, and you have to discard it and start anew

In this game, you’ll experience the Overcooked-like chaos where you’re in charge of a kitchen, but also find yourself battling against time reapers who are out to get you in a Gears of War-style combat. To survive and succeed, you’ll need quick reflexes, strategic planning, and sharp shooting skills. The challenge lies in managing your orders accurately and on time while fending off numerous attackers trying to take you down. Keep an eye on your ammo supply and stay alive throughout the chaos. Your goal is to complete all your tasks without making too many mistakes and then make a quick escape to your ship for extraction

The result is a fast-paced, exhilarating team-based shooter that combines the best parts of two beloved games to make something wholly unique and completely its own. Pizza Bandit is still early in development and JOFSOFT will be the first to tell you there’s a lot of work left to do, but playing it with a group was a blast, even when we didn’t initially know what we were doing. I can only imagine how much fun it’ll be with four friends while we’re screaming at each other about orders and tossing disco grenades. It’s a satisfying combination of shooting and cooking that feels good to play and better to play around with. I can only hope developer JOFSOFT sticks the landing because a world where time-traveling bounty hunters make New York-style pies and kill monsters is pretty rad. Pizza heals, bullets kill, and this concept rules. I can’t wait to play more Pizza Bandit, deliver more pies, and take out more baddies while wearing a chef’s hat. Those time reapers don’t stand a chance.
