Pete Docter, an executive at Pixar, has voiced his disappointment over the streaming debut of the critically-acclaimed animated film ‘Soul’, starring Jamie Foxx, on Disney+. Originally planned for a cinema release in December 2020, the film was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was instead made available directly through streaming on Disney+’s platform.
In a different phrasing, the movie Soul is directed by Docter and Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami). The narrative revolves around Joe Gardner, a passionate middle-school band teacher with a dream of performing at the top jazz club in town. Unfortunately, he stumbles and ends up in The Great Before – a realm where souls determine their personalities. The film features the vocal talents of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Angela Bassett, and Daveed Diggs. Dana Murray, an Academy Award nominee (Pixar short Lou), is the producer, while Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor, and Atticus Ross are responsible for its music and score.
Pete Docter on the consequences of releasing Soul on Disney+
In a recent interview, Doctor discussed the effects of launching Soul on Disney+. He acknowledged that the 2020 film didn’t have a significant influence because it lacked the impact of a traditional theater release. However, despite this, the movie garnered positive feedback from critics and currently boasts a 95% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it won two Oscars, one for Best Animated Feature.
Docter remarked through IndieWire that Soul didn’t create a large theatrical impact, which is undeniable. ‘At first,’ he said, ‘Soul, like us, didn’t have a choice in the matter. It was an immense pleasure to work on it, but I felt let down when it was released and seemingly lost at sea. The beauty of cinemas lies in their ability to provide shared drama – people watching together.’
He went on to say, “What I’m eager to maintain as much as possible is that each [Pixar] movie offers a unique taste. This diversity ensures that every film fits within the Pixar genre, but still allows for distinct variations like Soul being far from Cars 2. I admire this balance and I’m hopeful we can keep it up.”
