Pixar’s Black Cat Movie Gets Title, Plot & Director Announced

During the event at Annecy, Pixar’s Chief Operating Officer, Pete Docter, unveiled some initial information about an upcoming original film from Pixar featuring a black cat.

What is the new Pixar black cat movie?

In their next production following Luca, Pixar once again transports us to the enchanting cityscape of Venice with the movie titled Gatto. Directed by Enrico Casarosa, the narrative centers around a black cat named Nero who dwells in a society that perceives black cats as omens of misfortune. Despite his inability to swim, Nero navigates the labyrinthine canals of Venice. As he delves deeper into the underbelly of feline society, he finds himself entangled in the criminal exploits of a cat resembling a Mafia boss named Rocco, thereby amassing a debt. A vagabond musician named Maya takes in Nero as a stray and they form an emotional bond due to their shared status as “black cats” in this society. This relationship serves as the core theme of the movie.

In this upcoming movie, Pixar is introducing a fresh take on their animation technique. To bring the charm of Venice to life in a unique manner, the animators are adopting a style that mimics painting with brushstrokes, blended seamlessly with Pixar’s signature 3D style.

Doctor is eager to reveal more about the movie, expressing immense pride in it. He describes it as stunningly beautiful, touchingly heartwarming, and downright funny.

Gatto is set to arrive in theaters in summer 2027.

Pixar’s upcoming lineup includes both original movies and sequels. Firstly, their new release Elio is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. Secondly, they have another original film titled Hoppers, where a young girl employs science to enter a beaver’s body and prevent a mayor from constructing a highway that would devastate a beaver community’s home. Hoppers will premiere in theaters on March 6, 2026.

Next up is Toy Story 5, scheduled for release on June 19, 2026. Following that, Pixar will debut Gatto, and has two more sequels in the pipeline: Coco 2 and Incredibles 3. The director for the upcoming Incredibles film has been announced as Peter Sohn, who previously worked on The Good Dinosaur and Elemental.
