As a gamer with a keen interest in Hollywood and its behind-the-scenes drama, I can empathize with Keira Knightley‘s experience working on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. It seems she was caught between the Scylla of relentless media scrutiny and the Charybdis of the immense success that came with her role as Elizabeth Swann.
Actress Keira Knightley, recognized for her Academy Award-nominated performances in Pride & Prejudice and The Imitation Game, has publicly declared that she will no longer participate in series films following her experience with the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
In three Pirates of the Caribbean films, Keira Knightley played the leading role, starting with The Curse of the Black Pearl (released in 2003). She was also featured in Dead Man’s Chest from 2006 and At World’s End in 2007. During these appearances, she acted alongside Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp as Elizabeth Swann.
Keira Knightley says she ‘was taken down publicly’ because of Pirates of the Caribbean
In an interview with The Times, Keira Knightley opened up about her experiences during the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean.
At 17 years old during filming of the initial movie, Knightley admitted that while the series propelled her to fame in Hollywood, it came with its challenges. Reflecting on her experience, she spoke about facing criticism from the press concerning her looks within those films.
Knightley expressed, “It’s peculiar when something brings you both misery and success. These projects were the cause of my public humiliation, yet it was their success that allowed me to star in the films that eventually earned me Oscar nominations. They occupy a puzzling space in my mind because they were my most successful ventures, yet they also led to my public fall from grace.
Keira Knightley made clear that she doesn’t plan to join franchise films following Pirates of the Caribbean. She underlined that the working hours are overwhelming, it consumes large portions of your life, and there’s no control over where or when you film, nor what scenes you’re shooting.
Initially released, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films – specifically The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, and At World’s End – were massive hits at cinemas around the world. For instance, The Curse of the Black Pearl grossed an impressive $654 million, while Dead Man’s Chest surpassed a billion dollars in earnings, and At World’s End brought in roughly $960 million worldwide, as reported by Box Office Mojo.
