Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Is the Next Like a Dragon Game

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for the Yakuza series, I can hardly contain my excitement for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii! Ever since I first encountered Goro Majima’s charismatic antics in Yakuza 2, he has been one of my favorite characters. To see him take center stage in this new adventure is truly a dream come true.

At the RGG Summit 2024, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio in collaboration with Sega unveiled the upcoming installment in the Like a Dragon series titled “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii”. This game features the main character, “The Mad Dog” Goro Majima, and is set to release on February 28, 2025.

Fan favorite Goro Majima stars in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

Following the occurrences of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the game Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii reintroduces the beloved character Goro Majima into the limelight. Players will assume the role of The Mad Dog as they embark on a fresh nautical journey that places the former yakuza at the heart of a contemporary pirate dispute.

After the occurrences depicted in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Majima gets stranded on an uninhabited island following a shipwreck. He can’t recall his name, but he embarks on a journey across the vast ocean, hoping to find clues that will help him regain his identity. Alongside him is a young boy named Noah, who rescued Majima. Soon enough, they become entangled in a struggle between ruthless criminals, contemporary pirates, and other ne’er-do-wells for a fabled treasure, as the story unfolds.

In contrast to the latest main installments of the Like a Dragon series, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii follows the traditional playstyle of Yakuza games, with real-time brawling combat. Majima has two distinct fighting methods: “Mad Dog,” which is agile, stylish, and both precise and powerful – a style fans of Majima are accustomed to; and the new “Sea Dog” style, which employs dual short swords and various pirate tools for defeating enemies. Similar to previous Like a Dragon games, players can swiftly switch between these fighting styles during gameplay.

In the new gameplay style of Like a Dragon: Gaiden, you’ll find a novel feature – the ability to leap during battles. This might appear straightforward, but it wasn’t possible in earlier versions of the game. Notably, Majima can now execute a jump right in the middle of a combo to keep enemies airborne.

Apart from joining the series, players will now experience ship combat as well. They’ll have the chance to build their own crew, enhance their own vessel, and venture across the sea. If Majima is spotted by an adversary ship, a ship battle ensues. Players can then navigate towards the enemy ship and engage in a crew-versus-crew melee attempt to board it.

Three distinct settings are showcased in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, with one familiar – Hawaii itself, reappearing as it did in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Majima’s predicament of amnesia unfolds on the island known as Rich Island. Lastly, Madlantis serves as a hub for all other pirates to gather.

In a Yakuza-like game, it’s typical to encounter additional activities that can distract players. A few mini-games have been unveiled, such as the chaotic delivery service known as Crazy Delivery, the horse-drawn carriage ride called Dragon Cart, Karaoke sessions, and Minato Girls.

At the RGG Summit 2024, it comes to light that Ryosuke Horii will once again take on the director’s role for Like a Dragon: Yakuza – Set in Hawaii. The ensemble features Hidenari Ugaki as Goro Majima, First Summer Uika as Noah Rich, Munetaka Aoki as Teruhiko Shigaki, Ryuji Akiyama played by Masaru Fujita, Ayumi Tanida portraying Rodriguez, Shunsuke Daitoh as Mortimer, and Kenji Matsuda as Jason Rich.
