Philippe Malouin Creates Sofa Complete With “Hoodie” for Hem

Designer Philippe Malouin, who hails from Britain but resides in Canada, has crafted a fresh sofa for the Swedish brand Hem. The seating piece boasts a cozy upholstery reminiscent of the casual comfort found in hoodies.

Referred to as the “Grand Couch,” this design boasts a spacious layout, offering a loose, comforting shape that might appear plush yet is in fact firm and stable.

The highlight, however, lies in the seating’s cover, made by bonding Kvadrat fabric onto foam, and featuring elastic edges reminiscent of a bedsheet’s corners, ensuring a snug fit around the bottom.

Because of this thoughtful touch, the sofa seems as if it’s been used for quite some time, encouraging guests not just to avoid it but instead to relax, seat, or even nap comfortably on it.

According to the brand, the sofa exudes a subtle elegance along with a unique personality. Instead of adopting an overly elaborate design, it boasts a recognizable shape that appears welcoming and effortlessly comfortable. This creates a piece that harmoniously blends into any household – a space for unwinding, bonding, and rejuvenation.

In a new development, The Great Sofa signifies the next phase in Hem’s joint endeavor with Malouin. So far, this alliance has resulted in Hem designing the Chop line of metallic furniture, as well as the Bookmatch bench and tables. According to Hem Founder and CEO Petrus Palmér, “Hem perfectly captures the progressive design essence that drives our mission.

The “Great Sofa” is scheduled for release during Milan Design Week in April and will be displayed at the Capsule Plaza location. Accompanying it will be an exhibition exploring the question “Who was Hem?

It will go on sale on the Hem website on April 17, with prices starting at €3,998 ($4499 USD).
