Phasmophobia PS5 Review: A Spooky Good Time

As a seasoned gamer who’s weathered countless virtual storms and battles, I must say that Phasmophobia on PS5 has been an absolute gem during these trying times. It’s not often that a game manages to bring friends together for shared laughter, terror, and camaraderie like this one does.

Throughout the pandemic period, my friends and I spent much time enjoying the ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia, which was available on Steam’s Early Access. This game provided an excellent opportunity for us to socialize while attempting to identify the type of ghost present in each haunted setting. The matches ranged from being amusing – with us joking around and taunting the ghosts prior to getting eliminated – to genuinely frightening, but there was no denying that we were having a great time and creating lasting memories. Fortunately, the Phasmophobia port for PS5 ensures that all the eerie entertainment remains unaltered.

It’s worth noting that there is actually a ton of content in the game now. There are 13 maps, a lot of them being smaller residential areas, but there are also quite sizable locations like prisons and high schools. There’s also a better ramp-up in the level of ghost hunting as you start off with little cash and a lot of “D.I.Y.” ghost-hunting material, such as camcorders, before you can eventually get proper tripods and expensive tech. It gives the game a better feeling of progression than before.

The best way to make money is to escape alive (easier said than done with some of the more violent ghost types) and have successfully guessed what type of ghost you’ve documented. You do this by fulfilling objectives and making a guess in a journal afterward. You’ve got to pay attention to if there are cold spots in the house, what the ghost’s preferences are, and so on. It makes for a very fun experience and one that is much better with friends rather than solo.

Adapting to the Phasmophobia PS5 version requires some patience due to its unusual control setup, but don’t worry, there’s a tutorial to guide you. At first, it might seem awkward handling your tools, like accidentally dropping your flashlight, which can be quite amusing. However, these minor glitches keep the game endearing instead of frustrating, and I’ve often found that the quirks enhance the overall experience rather than diminishing it.

While I see little to no appeal in going on ghost hunts solo, I can’t recommend Phasmophobia enough when played with friends. It is pure joy to hear your friend talking trash to a ghost one minute and then hearing them scream out the next after it closed the door behind them and murdered them. Even in failure, a match of Phasmophobia results in a memorable time. That’s what co-op gaming is all about.

Phasmophobia PS5 Review: Final Verdict

Is the layout of the controls perplexing? Indeed. Does the game continue to harbor glitches and rough edges? Undeniably. Yet, does Phasmophobia for PS5 deliver some of the finest cooperative gaming experiences console users can enjoy? Without a doubt. This adaptation maintains an impressive fidelity to the original PC version that won me over, flaws included. You’ll undoubtedly laugh, feel scared, and have a fantastic time hunting ghosts with your friends.

SCORE: 7.5/10

According to ComingSoon’s review guidelines, a rating of 7.5 means “Good.” This entertainment item is enjoyable and worth watching, but its appeal might not be universal as taste varies among individuals.

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share my honest thoughts about Phasmophobia on PS5, having received a digital copy from the publisher for this purpose. I’ve been playing on version 1.000,001. Enjoy my review!
