As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of combat under my belt, I must say that Phantom Blade Zero left me utterly captivated at Tokyo Game Show 2024. The sheer depth and intricacy of its combat system harkened back to the glory days of Sekiro, sending my adrenaline surging like a river in full spate.
At Tokyo Game Show 2024, we had an opportunity to see more from S-Game’s duel-focused action-adventure game, Phantom Blade Zero. The game is visually stunning, but it was the intricate combat system and its resemblance to weapon-clashing games like Sekiro that truly left us impressed during the event.
Stand firm like a mountain, strike like lightning
At Tokyo Game Show 2024, I got to dive into a thrilling multi-act experience. The first act let me sneak around taking out low-level enemies and engaging in skirmishes with small groups of minor adversaries. The second act pitted me against Commander Cleave, a heavily armored warrior wielding a jagged blade, which was quite the laughable nickname. Lastly, I faced off against Huangxing, the Sunken Pillar of Kunlun, who swung a sword and a head collector basket on a rope in our final showdown.
As a seasoned gamer diving into Phantom Blade Zero, the heart of every battle lies in the masterful blend of well-timed parries and intricately planned combos, all while wielding an array of diverse weapons for exploration. During our Gamescom 2024 sneak peek, we delved deeper into the combat rhythm, highlighting the importance of precision timing in parrying and dodging enemy attacks, countering them for massive damage, and swiftly switching between two equipped weapons to unleash devastating abilities. Yet, at Tokyo Game Show 2024, I caught a glimpse of the immense freedom we’ll have to craft our own unique fighting style.
In my conversation with the director of Phantom Blade Zero, they shared that their team has designed a variety of melee and ranged weapons for the game. Some of these may resemble each other slightly, but there are significant differences. To illustrate, in the first demo section, we started with a standard one-handed straight sword and two agile daggers. This was followed by a large great katana in the second demo, and then Commander Cleave’s jagged blade in the third. Each weapon offers unique gameplay experiences, as demonstrated by the great katana’s ability to inflict a bleed effect with repeated strikes. Discovering which weapons suit you best in Phantom Blade Zero appears to be an exciting journey!
As a dedicated fan, I must say, engaging in combat against adversaries in Phantom Blade Zero has been quite thrilling so far! On the normal difficulty setting, you can certainly overpower your opponents to some extent, but prudence is still key. Over-relying on blocking and rolling will deplete your stamina, leaving you vulnerable. Attacking excessively invites retaliation from your enemies, who will punish you for it. Some of them even possess unique attacks designed to obliterate you – take Huangxing, for example, who can hurl his basket at your head. If you fail to dodge or counter such an attack, it results in quite the unruly haircut! Mastering perfect parries and skillfully dodging between attack sequences creates a captivating dance of offense and defense with my adversaries that is immensely gratifying, right down to the final blow. However, this intricate ballet requires understanding your enemies well enough to counter their offenses and breach their defenses.
A blade wielded with deadly efficiency
Phantom Blade Zero got on our radars with ease after Gamescom 2024, but the latest showcase truly floored us with its gameplay and options. I feel safe to say it was my favorite new thing I played during Tokyo Game Show 2024. The back and forth of combat, the variety of weapons to discover, and a formidable array of enemies have us feeling like plenty of intense duels are headed our way. We’ll look forward to seeing more of what Phantom Blade Zero has for us as S-Game continues to work on it.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of getting a sneak peek at an upcoming title during the Tokyo Game Show 2024, hosted by the game’s publisher. The intriguing action-adventure game, Phantom Blade Zero, is set to grace our screens on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms.
