Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, recently clarified some contentious alterations in the timeline of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.” Instead of sticking to Peter Parker’s early days within the MCU as initially planned, this animated series introduces a significant multiverse twist. In contrast to Tony Stark serving as Peter’s mentor, it is Norman Osborn who steps into that role, deviating substantially from the established MCU narrative and also diverging significantly from the traditional Marvel Comics lore.
According to Winderbaum, the reason for Stark’s absence in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is due to a significant change in the storyline.
He shared with The Official Marvel Podcast that the show commences at a well-known instance within the MCU. “The narrative starts with Peter retrieving a damaged Blu-ray player from the trash and walking into his apartment, leading to the iconic scene where Tony Stark is ready to propose the Stark internship and invite him to Berlin. However, due to events in the multiverse and unexpected occurrences, it’s not Tony Stark who greets him there. Instead, it’s Norman Osborn.
In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself in a school teeming with diverse students, mostly individuals of color, leaving me surrounded by new friends. My long-time buddy, Harry, had also undergone a transformation – he was now a confident, African-American teen with a striking resemblance to a transgender character, further deepening the narrative’s richness and complexity.
Feels like Disney really wanted to do a Miles Morales series.
Since its trailer release this month, the series has been positioned as an examination of a distinct variation of Parker’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) narrative. This alternate tale features unique relationships and influencing factors compared to the original storyline. Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, one of the executive producers, clarified that the show commences post-Civil War in the MCU’s main timeline but soon deviates into a separate path.
“It’s a world where [Peter] never met Ned, he never met MJ,” she said.
