As a long-time devotee of Bungie’s cosmic universe, I’ve been through enough twists and turns to navigate a labyrinth blindfolded. The rollercoaster ride that started with Destiny 2‘s Final Shape DLC seems unending, but the studio’s undying spirit towards Marathon gives me hope.
After Bungie released The Final Shape DLC, the ending chapter of Destiny 2, it’s been a wild journey for all fans. While this expansion was met with thunderous applause from critics, its sales didn’t quite meet our expectations, which, although not the primary reason, unfortunately resulted in job losses for over 200 team members. Yet, despite the uncertainty surrounding Destiny’s future, we, the developers, are eagerly anticipating our next venture into the first-person shooter genre with Marathon.
Earlier, Jason Schreier from Bloomberg reported that Bungie had abandoned a spin-off for Destiny 2 called Payback to concentrate on a project called Marathon. However, it appears that the progress on Marathon, an upcoming extraction shooter, might not be going as smoothly as planned. In the latest episode of Friends Per Second podcast, Schreier shared that there’s not much enthusiasm around Marathon and concerns have been raised about its ability to meet its targeted release date of 2025, suggesting it may face a delay.
If such an event occurs, it marks the second significant postponement for Marathon following Bungie’s decision to defer the game’s launch in late 2023 during their initial round of layoffs. Moreover, aside from the announcement trailer released last year, no further sneak peeks have been shared since then. However, as the studio has not yet confirmed a release date, we advise approaching this news with caution, just as you would any unconfirmed information.
If you’re a dedicated fan of Destiny 2, the fact that Bungie is prioritizing Marathon doesn’t necessarily mean your beloved loot shooter won’t receive further updates. While they are no longer planning to release major expansions in the future, they will continue to deliver smaller content updates from time to time. Additionally, the Destiny 2 team has hinted on their official platform (formerly Twitter) that they will discuss the future of Destiny soon, suggesting there’s still much to anticipate.
Hey gamers! I can’t wait to chat with y’all about what lies ahead in the world of Destiny and our upcoming multi-year adventure. As soon as we nail down a release date, you’ll be the first to know. Thanks for sticking with us, see you again real soon!
