I’ve been pondering about the whereabouts of Trey Murphy III, the rising star on the New Orleans Pelicans. He was truly shining in his fourth season, but unfortunately, he sustained a severe shoulder injury. His exceptional play had been a beacon of hope for our struggling team, so his absence now is a significant blow.
Let me provide some insights on Murphy’s recent injury, his outstanding performance this season, and its implications for New Orleans in the future.
What happened to Trey Murphy III?
Due to an injury involving a torn labrum and a partial tear of his rotator cuff in his right shoulder, team Pelicans have confirmed that forward Trey Murphy III will be out for the entire season.
In the initial phase of Monday’s game against the Pistons, which ended in a score of 127-81, Murphy suffered a shoulder dislocation while attempting to retrieve a loose ball. He was on the court for just one minute before having to leave. The Pelicans made an official confirmation of his injury after conducting additional tests.
Murphy was having an exceptional season, reaching career highs in several categories. On average, he scored 21.6 points, grabbed 5.2 rebounds, and dished out 3.6 assists over 52 games. He managed to shoot accurately at 45.4% from the field and 36.1% from beyond the arc, attempting 8.4 shots per game (as per NBA data). Compared to last season, his scoring average saw a significant boost of 6.4 points. Moreover, this was his third consecutive year with over 150 successful three-point shots. The Pelicans have indicated that they will share updates on his recovery progress when necessary.
The towering 6-foot-8 forward has become an indispensable figure for New Orleans, showcasing his skills as a versatile 3-point shooter and defender. In October of last year, Murphy sealed a four-year, $112 million rookie contract extension with the Pelicans. This season, he’s taken on a much larger role, moving from bench player to a significant starter, following his past years in New Orleans.
This season, the Pelicans have faced numerous injuries and as a result, they’ve amassed a record of 18 wins and 51 losses with just 13 games left to play. For quite some time now, they’ve been out of playoff contention. The absence of Murphy makes the team’s struggles in an already tough season even more complex.
