In contrast to Joel’s violent demise in Episode 2 of Season 2, Craig Mazin, one of the creators of ‘The Last of Us’, assures that we will see more of Joel across upcoming episodes or seasons in this post-apocalyptic show.
In Episode 2, titled “Through the Valley,” viewers were left questioning if Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) would reappear in the show series. During this episode, Joel was killed by a vengeful Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever), with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) watching as Joel met a violent end.
What did Craig Mazin say about Pedro Pascal’s The Last of Us future?
According to Mazin, although Joel might not physically be present anymore, he’s significantly influencing the show’s upcoming storylines. This was mentioned during a discussion on The Last of Us podcast.
I’d like to point out explicitly that while watching, certain enigmas unfold concerning Ellie and Joel’s bond. There are unanswered questions about their relationship, and since trailers have already been released showing numerous scenes, I don’t consider it a spoiler to mention that their story is not yet concluded.
Joel isn’t gone for good – you can catch more about him on ‘The Last of Us’ Official Podcast, now streaming on @StreamOnMax and all major podcast platforms.

In the show’s narrative, we witnessed the extraordinary connection between Joel and Ellie, a bond that developed throughout the initial season. Yet, one of Joel’s actions strained their relationship significantly, leading to a painful split during the second season. This separation was particularly harsh, as Ellie deliberately kept her distance from Joel at the beginning of Season 2. Consequently, Ellie’s final memory with Joel would be just before he disappeared forever.
In addition to the main cast, Season 2 features Gabriel Luna, Rutina Wesley, young artist Mazino, Isabela Merced, Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Jeffrey Wright, and Catherine O’Hara.
In simpler terms, the second season of “The Last of Us” debuted on April 13 and continues to air every Sunday at 9 p.m. exclusively on HBO. If you missed the first season, you can find it streaming on Max.
