Pedro Pascal, who plays the lead role in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, reminisced about his character’s brutal demise in the HBO series Game of Thrones. In season 4, Pascal played Oberyn Martell. Sadly, Oberyn met a grisly end at the hands of Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson’s character Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane in episode 8 of season 4, titled The Mountain and the Viper.
What did Pedro Pascal say about Game of Thrones exit?
During a recent chat with Vanity Fair, Pascal pondered over his long and impactful career, reminiscing about the significant projects he’s been involved in. The topic of Game of Thrones naturally arose, leading Pascal to discuss the shocking death scene of his character and how that role has affected his professional journey since then.
Passing a comment, Pascal expressed his dismay over Oberyn’s death, stating, “It’s terrible,” followed by, “Those are his [Oberyn’s] teeth flying. This is twisted. That’s revolting.” He went on to describe the filming process of that scene. “Despite how intense it appears, he [Björnsson] was gently pressing against my eyes. One would assume his entire weight would be on me with that costume, but I didn’t feel him at all. He managed his own weight. Thus, we were merely acting,” Pascal explained.
He mentioned that Björnsson’s costume had tubes extending from it right up to his fingers for pumping artificial blood. It is worth noting that Oberyn met his end when the Mountain brutally smashed his skull with his bare hands.
In the show, the winner of the Screen Actors Guild award revealed that fake facial prosthetics were utilized to portray his disfigured visage. The actor from The Mandalorian expressed that his role in Game of Thrones was a pivotal moment and significantly contributed to his subsequent achievements. He marveled, “I can hardly believe it happened, that the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, would offer me this opportunity. They easily could have chosen someone else.
Prior to Game of Thrones, Pascal’s acting career was primarily focused on theater and he often played secondary roles in different television series. In a recent interview, Pascal acknowledged that Sarah Paulson and Amanda Peet facilitated his audition with Benioff and Weiss.
