It’s being rumored that Paul Rudd and Jack Black could star in a new Anaconda movie, as a modern retelling of the original horror-thriller is allegedly underway at Sony Pictures. The production might soon lock down its leading actors.

Sony reportedly wants Paul Rudd and Jack Black for Anaconda movie cast

Actors Paul Rudd, known for playing Ant-Man, and Jack Black, a regular in Sony’s Jumanji series, are said to be considering a role in Sony’s upcoming remake of Anaconda. The initial report came from well-known scooper MyTimeToShineHello on the platform X (formerly Twitter).

Brad Fuller and Andrew Form will produce the movie through their company, Fully Formed Entertainment, according to Deadline. Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, who worked together on the 2022 action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, are responsible for writing the script. It’s said that Gormican will also direct the film, joining the project in 2023. The movie is being described as a fresh take rather than a remake or sequel.

According to recent reports, a new Anaconda movie has entered production at Sony Columbia Pictures, with Evan Daugherty (known for Tomb Raider and Snow White and the Huntsman) serving as the screenwriter. However, it remains uncertain if this project is the same one that Sony is currently developing.

1997 saw the release of the original Anaconda film, which was directed by Luis Llosa based on a screenplay written by Hans Bauer, Jack Epps Jr., and Jim Cash. The movie boasts an impressive cast including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, and Owen Wilson. The story revolves around a documentary team that, while exploring the Amazon rainforest, cross paths with a Paraguayan snake hunter and his target – a massive green anaconda. Despite receiving a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it grossed approximately $136.8 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $45 million.

2004 saw my favorite movie, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, spin-off from its original success. Afterward, two television sequels followed – Anaconda 3: Offspring (in 2008) and Anacondas: Trail of Blood (in 2009). A crossover with another beloved series, Lake Placid vs. Anaconda, premiered in 2015. In the future, a Chinese remake, simply called Anaconda, made its debut in China in March 2024.
