Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor Are Lovers in The History of Sound Trailer

Mubi posted a sneak peek of the trailer for the upcoming romantic drama set in a historical period, titled “The History of Sound.” This film features Paul Mescal, known for his role in Gladiator II, and Josh O’Connor from The Crown. After its debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, audiences can catch this movie in cinemas starting on September 12, 2025.

In 1917, a gifted music student named Lionel encounters David at the Boston Conservatory, sharing a strong affinity for folk tunes. After many years, Lionel gets a letter from David that sets off an unplanned adventure through Maine’s wilderness to gather traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, romantic relationship, and their work in preserving this music will significantly impact Lionel’s life, even though he may not be fully conscious of it.

The video presents Mescal and O’Connor as two star-crossed lovers united by their shared passion for music. The movie titled ‘The History of Sound’ is helmed by director Oliver Hermanus, with a script penned by Ben Shattuck who drew inspiration from his award-winning short story that won him a Pushcart Prize. The production is orchestrated by Lisa Ciuffetti, Oliver Hermanus, Andrew Kortschak, Sara Murphy, Thérèsa Ryan, Zhang Xin, Tatiana Bears, Lara Costa Calzado, Giovanni Pompili, Bruno Vernaschi-Berman, and Sean Wheelan. The technical team includes cinematographer Alexander Dynan and editor Chris Wyatt.
