Wondering why Patrick Kane‘s injury is keeping him from playing for the Detroit Red Wings? It appears an upper-body problem has kept the top-tier winger off the ice, leading to speculation about his condition and how the team will handle this crucial phase of the season.
Let’s delve into what we currently understand about the team’s situation, examine their strategies for change, and discuss potential effects on their chances in the playoffs.
How did Patrick Kane get injured?
Star forward Patrick Kane from the Detroit Red Wings was unable to play in yesterday’s match against the Montreal Canadiens due to an upper-body injury, as confirmed by their coach, Todd McLellan.
According to reports, Kane is said to have sustained an injury during the Red Wings’ clash with the Dallas Stars on January 19. For a moment, he stepped off the ice, but came back to complete the game. He also played on January 23 against the Philadelphia Flyers. Currently, the team has classified him as having a day-to-day injury status.
36-year-old Kane has been instrumental for Detroit this season, netting 11 goals and setting up 19 others in 42 matches. Prior to his injury, he was on a remarkable run, tallying 16 points over 10 games. Notably, Kane shone particularly bright during power plays, earning 15 points there. He signed with the Red Wings as a free agent in November 2023, following a 16-year tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks during which he claimed three Stanley Cups.
In Kane’s absence, Detroit is looking to Vladimir Tarasenko to take on a more prominent role. Despite a challenging start to the season with only six goals in 46 matches, he now finds himself on the second line alongside Alex DeBrincat and Andrew Copp. Coach Todd McLellan sees this as a pivotal moment for Tarasenko, who was brought in to help offset the loss of last year’s top goal scorers.
In the Atlantic Division, the Red Wings currently hold the seventh position, yet they’re still fighting for a spot in the playoffs, trailing by only five points from a wildcard berth. Kane’s return to form and Tarasenko’s impact in his expanded role will be crucial as Detroit aims to break its four-year playoff absence, which began in 2016.
