Path of Exile: Settlers of Kalguur focuses on real-time city-building

As a long-time fan of Path of Exile, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming expansion, Settlers of Kalguur. Having played this game for years and seen it evolve with each new expansion, I’ve grown attached to its intricate world and engaging mechanics.

Path of Exile is nearing the end of its major expansions before the launch of its upcoming sequel. For over a decade, Grinding Gear Games has kept players engaged with frequent new content and leagues. Last Thursday, they revealed the next significant expansion for this dungeon crawler: Path of Exile: Settlers of Kalguur.

The early settlers from Kalguuran dream of establishing a new community in Kingsmarch, envisioning it as a thriving marketplace where trade occurs with nearby villages in Wraeclast. To set things in motion, some residents from Wraeclast are essential. Players will encounter some familiar figures, such as Dannig, Rog, Tujen, and Gwennen, who have returned following the Expedition league of 2021.

Players commence their adventure by encountering Johan, the King’s right-hand man, at Lioneye’s Watch. He represents the Kalguuran king with the mission of transforming Kingsmarch from an empty piece of land into a thriving commercial hub. To construct Kingsmarch, players need to gather essential resources such as Crimson Iron, Orichalcum, Petrified Amber, Bismuth, and Verisium. Although this may seem straightforward, these resources attract unwanted enemies for various reasons. In order to mine these resources, players must defeat the hostile creatures guarding them, which won’t be an effortless task.

Certainly, once the monsters are eliminated, there will still be a requirement for labor to mine resources. Miners exist and they’ll expect payment in advance. The value of gold across Wraeclast is expected to decrease, making it an affordable option to hire miners. Raulf, a recruiter, can facilitate the hiring process as soon as you have a sufficient gold stockpile ready. Each miner comes with unique skills and corresponding fees.

Waiting for resources to be mined in Path of Exile takes some time but happens in real-time. Luckily, this duration will elapse regardless of whether a player is logged in or not. Fortunately, there are methods to expedite this procedure. Players can employ additional laborers and enhance the Kingsmarch mining station with advanced tools for faster results.

In Path of Exile, once players have gathered the necessary resources, they can initiate the real-time city-building phase of Kingsmarch. To propel Kingsmarch’s progress, players need to choose the most beneficial structures. Previously mentioned options include upgrading the mining station or constructing new stations for Smelters, Disenchanters, and Farmers, each contributing to accelerating the village’s development. Upon reaching a sufficient size, build a Harbor to establish trading relationships with Kalguuran villages. A profitable trading network brings in additional resources and valuable rewards. However, be cautious: sending out trading ships involves potential risks from pirates, monsters, and environmental hazards. Hire specialists to ensure safe voyages.

In Path of Exile, the latest addition to the settlement mechanic offers various functions. The Kalguurans have introduced Isla, a character familiar to veterans from the Heist expansion, to aid players with Kaltuuran-altered Map Devices. This feature enables sending specific workers to finish maps that you might not have the time for. Furthermore, Dannig joins in by managing a Runesmithing Table, which introduces new crafting recipes and exclusive equipment. Additionally, Faustus from the Heist league is responsible for overseeing a currency exchange within the settlement.

As an avid fan of Path of Exile, I’m excited to share that this update brings more than just the surface-level changes we see. For starters, Ascendancy classes are undergoing significant transformations. The Warden is making its debut as a replacement for the Raider, offering players the opportunity to master elemental assaults, fortify their defenses, and hone their proficiency in Tinctures – a fresh resource that can be discovered throughout the game. On the other hand, the Gladiator has been given an extensive makeover. It continues to emphasize Bleed and Block, but now comes with new abilities enabling it to counterattack adversaries on the offensive.

As a passionate gamer immersed in the intriguing world of Path of Exile, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming additions that we haven’t had a chance to discuss here. Fret not, as the latest patch notes will fill you in on all the juicy details. The most significant update is the game’s full optimization for current-gen hardware. Get ready for an enhanced gaming experience!
