The heyday of PC first-person shooters was brimming with numerous iconic games. One such game was Painkiller, developed by People Can Fly in 2004. Since enough years have passed, a remake seems fitting. Saber Interactive’s 3D Realms brand, together with developer Anshar Studios, are set to revive Painkiller for today’s gamers and it seems that it will be available for purchase later this year.
During the Future Games Show on Thursday, Painkiller was revealed as a game that will transport players to Purgatory. The protagonist, who has just received a final chance for redemption after being judged eternally, must confront the fallen angel Azazel, which promises to be quite challenging. However, the odds are somewhat in his favor due to the availability of powerful weaponry and, potentially, the assistance of other players.
As a hardcore gamer, I’m pumped about the upcoming Painkiller! This game sticks to what we love – iconic weapons from the series, old-school movement mechanics, and intense arena battles against terrifying demons. To keep things interesting, Anshar Studios is introducing four unique characters each with their own special abilities, sleek modern level designs, and innovative features like tarot cards that boost different skills.
If you’re a solo player, no worries! You can still dive into the game on your own. But for those who want to team up, Painkiller now offers online co-op with up to two other players. For gamers without friends, there’s always the option to play alongside AI bots instead. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!
It’s intriguing to note that Thursday’s declaration isn’t Saber’s first endeavor in reviving the Painkiller series. In fact, way back in 2021, the publisher unveiled plans for another Painkiller reboot, this time collaborating with Koch Media’s Prime Matter. However, no progress seemed to materialize from that project, but strangely enough, “The New Painkiller” remains listed on the Prime Matter website.
In late 2025, an attack on Earth is expected to commence. Meanwhile, the game “Painkiller” is scheduled for launch on personal computers (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
