Paddington in Peru Is Influenced by 2 Werner Herzog Movies

As a lifelong fan of the beloved bear from Peru, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming film, “Paddington in Peru.” Having traveled extensively through South America myself, I can attest to the breathtaking landscapes and friendly people that Dougal Wilson has drawn inspiration from.

The director of “Paddington in Peru,” Dougal Wilson, reveals that the upcoming movie draws inspiration from two films by Werner Herzog.

In January, the movie featuring Paddington in Peru will hit U.S. cinemas. This is a continuation of the stories told in 2014’s Paddington and 2017’s Paddington 2. The film is helmed by director Wilson, with Ben Whishaw once again lending his voice to the character of Paddington Brown.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Wilson shared that his work on Paddington in Peru was greatly inspired by two films directed by Werner Herzog: “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” from 1972 and “Fitzcarraldo” from 1982.

He remarked that Peru boasts an astonishing array of terrains and unique geology, with the Andes and the enigmatic Incan region standing out. If you’ve watched Werner Herzog’s ‘Aguirre, The Wrath of God,’ we traverse landscapes reminiscent of those. Moreover, the locals are extraordinarily welcoming.

Wilson stated, “Certainly, there are mopeds and cell phones around, yet they maintain a traditional appearance in the rural areas of the Andes. In an attempt to portray Peruvian culture, I wove a Peruvian myth into our entire narrative.

What else do we know about Paddington in Peru?

In the official summary, it is stated that Paddington, having returned to Peru, shares his story there by visiting his dear Aunt Lucy who now lives at a home for retired bears. The Brown family accompanies him, and an exciting journey unfolds when they are drawn into an unforeseen adventure through the lush Amazon rainforest and up the mountainous regions of Peru, all due to a perplexing mystery.

Alongside Whishaw, the film’s star-studded cast features Hugh Bonneville portraying Henry Brown, Emily Mortimer as Mary Brown, Madeleine Harris as Judy Brown, Samuel Joslin as Jonathan Brown, Julie Walters as Mrs. Bird, Jim Broadbent as Samuel Gruber, Olivia Colman in the role of The Reverend Mother, Antonio Banderas as Hunter Cabot, Carla Tous playing Gina Cabot, and Imelda Staunton lending her voice to Aunt Lucy.

In US theaters on January 17, 2025, the movie “Paddington” (from Colombia Pictures) set in Peru will make its debut.
