As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of the Pacific Rim franchise since its inception, this news has sent shivers of excitement down my spine! Ever since I first witnessed the colossal Kaiju and Jaegers clash on the silver screen back in 2013, I’ve been yearning for a deeper dive into this captivating universe.

A Pacific Rim origin story prequel series is being developed.

In the summer of 2013, Guillermo del Toro’s movie “Pacific Rim” hit the screens across the United States. The cast included stars like Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, among others.

In March of 2018, a new chapter unfolded under the title Pacific Rim: Uprising. Guillermo del Toro was the producer behind this film, while Steven S. DeKnight took on the director’s role. The main cast included John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and Cailee Spaeny.

Per Variety, Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis are now developing a Pacific Rim origin story series.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time. 

What else do we know about the Pacific Rim origin story prequel series?

In the initial film of the Pacific Rim series, events unfolded with scenes that provided background information about Kaiju, monstrous creatures emerging from a portal in the Pacific Ocean known as ‘the Breach.’ To combat these threats, humankind constructed colossal robots called Jaegers. The series might explore this era of the franchise’s timeline, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Moreover, it’s been revealed that Heisserer has secured a first-look TV contract with Legendary Entertainment. This implies that Heisserer, along with Lewis, will carry on creating IP-based projects specifically for this company in the television sector.

Apart from the movies Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim Uprising, a Netflix anime series called Pacific Rim: The Black was also introduced in March 2024. This series ran for two seasons, with season 2 of Pacific Rim: The Black being made available in April 2022.

At this point, we don’t have any updates about the cast or when the upcoming Pacific Rim origin series might be released as it is still in development.
