It appears that Blizzard is diving into uncharted waters again: they are creating a brand-new dating simulator within the Overwatch universe, which explores the realm of visual novels. However, at this point, only players in China will get to experience this romantic diversion, as fans worldwide have been eagerly awaiting a sequel to the humorous spin-off. Instead, Blizzard is opting for an unusual move with this launch.

Loverwatch: The Return of Overwatch Romance

In simpler terms, some gamers continue to fondly recall “Loverwatch,” a comical mini-game launched in 2023 that infused romance and humor into Overwatch 2. During that time, enthusiasts had the chance to court popular characters like Genji or Mercy. Additionally, by successfully completing certain tasks with Cupid Hanzo, players were able to unveil a hidden ending, receiving an exclusive highlight intro as a reward.

The reaction to it was extremely favorable: the brief browser game resonated strongly with the community, who were yearning for more narrative-based enjoyment instead of just deliveries and checkpoints. However, following Valentine’s Day 2023, there was no news about the project – until recently.

In addition to Genji, players now have the option to pursue relationships with D.Va, Lifeweaver, Mauga, Juno, Junker Queen, and Cassidy.

It appears that with an expanded roster and fresh tales, Blizzard is experimenting to see how sustainable this type of mode could be in the future, but for now, it’s exclusive to China. Regrettably, fans residing outside of China will have to wait before they can enjoy this new content. To play the dating sim, Blizzard has implemented stringent identity verification, necessitating a legitimate ID and a confirmed phone number. This decision seems designed to restrict access solely to Chinese players.

Overwatch 2 Only Returned to China in February

For Chinese gamers, the newly released dating simulator is a significant event following a prolonged wait: due to an expired licensing agreement, Overwatch 2 was inaccessible in China for a complete two years.
