As a crypto investor, I’m excited about Sony Block Solutions Labs launching its Layer 2 blockchain, Soneium. The anticipation was high, and today, the Singapore-based subsidiary finally unveiled it to its eager users. But, not long after, things took an unexpected turn.
Based on the latest updates, there have been claims suggesting that the company may have blocked some meme-based cryptocurrencies. This means that specific digital assets are no longer allowed to be traded within their system, rendering them potentially worthless in terms of transactions on the network.
Despite Sony’s assertion that the blocked tokens allegedly infringed on copyright laws, numerous users find this reasoning unconvincing. Instead, they express their irritation, often turning to social media platforms to share their dissatisfaction openly.
Users Call Out Sony over Soneium Network Launch
Based on feedback from certain users on platform X, it’s been suggested that Sony might have acted impulsively without giving due consideration to their decision. Contrarily, others posit that the blacklisting was not linked to the tokens at all, but rather stemmed from Sony’s personal interests.
A notable instance here is the anonymous creator of pump.fun, known as Alon, stating that the system appears to be actively blocking meme coins it dislikes, swiftly reducing every user’s holdings to zero.
A well-known figure who has become a vocal critic is Kawz, the founder of Time.fun. He alleged that Sony’s actions might be seen as a ‘rug pull’, where the company seemingly tricked innocent users out of their money, potentially costing hundreds of dollars from them. In simpler terms, Kawz suggested that Sony may have deceived its users in a harmful manner.
“Soneium rugged users >$100k in ETH on launch day. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Awaiting Response
It’s worth noting that neither Sony nor Soneium has issued an official statement regarding these allegations. Yet, it seems that the blacklisting might be aimed at tokens whose names or branding seem to conflict with other projects.
Users argue that it’s essential to strike a balance between safeguarding intellectual property rights and preserving the openness of the blockchain network. This tension, leading to their increasing worries, revolves around the extent of control that blockchain developers ought to exercise.
Currently, any user trying to utilize the problematic tokens will encounter a message denying access. Yet, there’s a chance that limitations could be removed in future for tokens which successfully handle their copyright concerns.
