Outlander season 7B’s promotion completely ruined the impact of Jamie’s death

As a dedicated Outlander fan with years of invested emotions and countless hours spent immersed in this captivating saga, I must express my disappointment at the misleading trailers for season 7B. The heart-wrenching scene where Lord John Grey broke the news to Claire about Jamie’s death was undoubtedly moving, but the impact was somewhat diminished due to prior knowledge that Jamie survives in the storyline.

In the tenth episode of Outlander’s seventh season, Lord John Grey shared some shattering news with Claire. Yet, the intensity might have been more profound if not overshadowed by the promotions for Outlander’s seventh season B.

As you watched Lord John Grey tell Claire about Jamie being killed at sea, there was no doubt there was a lump in your throat. You may have even started to believe it for a second. Caitriona Balfe did an excellent job in showing her grief through the clips, and the show was wonderful in making us believe that it was the end for their story.

As a devoted Outlander fan, I must admit that there’s an element in the latest episode that somewhat diminished its emotional resonance for me. This harks back to the promotional content unveiled before the premiere of season 7B.

We know Jamie has to survive in Outlander season 7B

Regardless of your reading habits, it’s evident that Jamie Fraser will survive. The television series has strong reasons to keep its central figure alive. Firstly, unlike in ‘Game of Thrones’, where unexpected events are common, this isn’t a show where anything can happen without consequence.

In this episode of Outlander, the promotion seemed to dilute the show’s impact somewhat. This is because we are already aware that Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, will appear in season 8. There has been extensive coverage of him on social media, with pictures and videos from set leaks as well as official footage and behind-the-scenes posts shared by himself or others. Additionally, Heughan has openly discussed the filming of the final season and his experiences.

Later on, there’s a promotional scene depicting Jamie wearing a blue coat. We understand that Jamie needs to return to America, and it’s clear he will join George Washington’s forces in the fight for independence. Additionally, there are sneak peeks from upcoming episodes hinting at Jamie eventually reuniting with Claire.

It’s somewhat disheartening. The initial time I read the book, I felt a knot in my throat. I wasn’t certain if Jamie would make it or if he was truly dead at the beginning. That unexpected shock made me more engrossed in the book, and it made Claire’s sorrow seem utterly genuine to me.

Will Jamie make it back before Claire marries Lord John Grey?

One point worth pondering is this: Although we are certain that Jamie will eventually return to America, the question remains as to whether he’ll get there prior to Lord John Grey and Claire’s wedding.

In just 24 hours, Captain Richardson has allowed Lord John Grey to rectify an awkward situation before arresting Claire. It’s evident that John expects Claire to hastily prepare herself and marry him. The question arises: could Jamie manage to step into the picture within this brief time frame? Might he deliver a dramatic “I object” moment, adding an exciting twist to the unfolding events? Now, wouldn’t that make for an intriguing spectacle!

Outlander airs on Fridays on STARZ.
