As a dedicated fan who has followed the captivating journey of Claire and Jamie through thick and thin for more than a decade, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as we approach the final chapters of Outlander. The show has been an integral part of my life, much like a beloved family member or dear friend, always there to provide comfort, adventure, and a touch of romance when needed.
For over a decade now, Outlander has been in production. As we approach its conclusion, an exhilarating landmark is soon to be reached.
Beginning in September, production commenced on the last batch of Outlander episodes. This significant step forward signified an important achievement as it brought the series to 100 filmed episodes. Just like other shows that reach this milestone, there was a special event to commemorate the occasion.
Entertainment Weekly obtained unique footage from the party where Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe used a sword to cut a cake, reminiscent of a wedding for their characters Claire and Jamie. The festivities also featured David Berry with his popular scruffy beard, stirring up excitement among fans.
Outlander hits the 100-episode milestone
Few television shows manage to reach 100 episodes these days, as many are cut short after only a few seasons. Initially, Outlander was apprehensive that this would be its fate upon launch. Given its status as a modest series, there was much excitement when it secured a second season renewal.
The show significantly changed direction when it became available on Netflix internationally, and then saw further transformation when certain episodes aired on Netflix in the U.S. As new seasons were unveiled, an increasing number of viewers opted to tune in through Starz.
Despite the initial plans for 100 episodes, it seemed unlikely during the pandemic that Season 6 would consist of 12 episodes; instead, it was reduced to eight. The remaining four episodes were scheduled for Season 7, which was split into two parts for bi-weekly airing. At a certain point, there was a strong possibility that this season might be the final one. Even Maril Davis shared this apprehension.
In the end, it was decided that Outlander would continue for another 10 episodes in Season 8. This decision was made promptly as the final season, providing enough time to conclude all storylines in a manner fitting for the television series. Needless to say, this setup might not please fans of the books!
How much filming of Outlander has happened in 100 episodes?
Matt B. Roberts, the showrunner, discussed the extensive filming that went into making these 100 episodes. Although it’s been a journey spanning 11 years to reach this milestone, if the series had been filmed non-stop, it would have taken approximately four years to produce instead.
At that moment, there remained an additional episode left to fire, since the series will officially conclude with a total of 101 episodes.
As filming for Outlander Season 8 continues, viewers can anticipate the release of Season 7B. Additionally, a spin-off series titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood is also on its way.
Outlander Season 7B premieres on Friday, Nov. 22 on Starz.
