As a dedicated fan who has followed the thrilling journey of the Pogues since their very first adventure, I must say that the events unfolding in the Outer Banks season 4 finale have left me utterly speechless! The plot twist was nothing short of groundbreaking, and it will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the series as a whole.
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from the Outer Banks season 4 finale.
Following the climactic end of Outer Banks Season 4 Part 2, Poguelandia has been officially placed under an emergency status! The teen drama series reached new heights with its most daring episode yet, featuring the most extraordinary (and emotionally taxing) plot twist the show has ever seen. The reverberations from this shocking turn of events will be felt strongly in Season 5.
In the tenth episode of season 4 from “Outer Banks”, the Pogues, along with Rafe, journey to Morocco on a mission to find the Blue Crown and secure their fortune in the gold game. Just like any Pogue escapade, things don’t go smoothly while they’re in Morocco, resulting in an unexpected incident that no one could have anticipated. Even if you had predicted it, you wouldn’t have wanted it to occur.
In the upcoming fifth season of “Outer Banks,” one of our long-standing characters, a key figure from the show’s debut, will bid farewell. This departure promises to take us on an emotionally charged journey as we progress further into the story.
Here’s your last spoiler warning!
Rudy Pankow leaving Outer Banks after JJ’s death
In the final episode of the fourth season of “Outer Banks,” JJ meets his tragic end when Chandler Groff, his biological father, viciously stabs him in the abdomen. This brutal act is Groff’s retaliation, fueled by anger because JJ didn’t assist him after he was pushed into a well by Rafe. Being a ruthless and dangerous individual, Groff further endangers Kiara’s life and carries out the cold-blooded murder of his own son, despite already having obtained what he sought – the Blue Crown.
The entire Pogues group gathers around Kiara to express their grief over JJ’s demise, as the show concludes with their determination to accompany Groff to Lisbon and seek justice for JJ’s death. Tragically, the faithful and fearless Pogue character will no longer be played by Rudy Pankow in the series, Outer Banks. Netflix’s Tudum verified Pankow’s departure from the show through an interview.
Pankow shared a farewell statement to his OBX family and fans with Tudum:
I want to leave the cast and crew with the biggest thank-you. It’s been such a pleasure to come to work. This is by far the biggest thing I’ve ever done in [my] experience, and to have this as my start is a start of a lifetime. I’m going to miss it. Thank you for so many fun memories I’ll have the rest of my life. To all the fans that show so much support and love for JJ, I just want to say thank you. It really did make an impact on me, playing him. It’s been an honor to bring him to life for you guys, and it’s been a joy to play him. And P4L!
As reported by Tudum, from the start of the series, co-creators and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke had intended to eventually write off JJ’s character. When Pankow tried out for the role, JJ was depicted as “loyal beyond measure,” a trait that proved accurate until his heartrending demise. He would risk his life for any of his companions without hesitation.
Everyone is finding it hard to let go of JJ, and it’s never easy when a beloved character meets their end in a story. It seems impossible, but the departure of JJ has given the Pogues a deeply personal reason to continue their journey. This loss won’t be easily forgotten or brushed aside. Instead, JJ’s death leaves a profound impact on each member of the group and their dynamic as a whole, driving the narrative forward in the final season.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share my thoughts about recent developments in my favorite show, Outer Banks. The departure of JJ and Pankow from the series has left quite an impact on me and fellow fans alike. Madison Bailey, who brings Kiara to life, expressed that losing JJ’s character is a significant blow, one we’ll all feel deeply. Stokes, living with Pankow during the filming of season 1, built a strong friendship with him both on-screen and off, making their exit bittersweet. Madelyn Cline referred to JJ as the heart of Outer Banks, underscoring his importance in the show’s narrative.
JJ fully embodied the fighting spirit of a Pogue and never gave up. We’re going to miss him a lot in Outer Banks season 5, but his friends will make sure that Groff doesn’t get away with either the Blue Crown or the murder of his son. Wait until they link back up with Luke and find out Groff killed Larissa, JJ’s mother, too. Rest in peace, Jackson. You deserved so much better from life.
